Do you want to work on delivering programs that improve our community in a busy, diverse, inner city area? Are you skilled at working with others to achieve great things? Then a role at the City of Yarra as our Senior Sustainable Transport Officer may be for you!

The Sustainability and Strategic Transport Branch forms part of the Planning and Place Making Division. You will work with transport planners, engineers, urban planners and urban designers, as well as leading your own walking and cycling programs and projects. You will also build and maintain relationships with important external organisations and groups including schools, major employers and the community.

We are looking for someone who will

  • Have a passion about sustainable transport and building relationships with people to achieve better outcomes for people travelling in Yarra. You will work with others across the organisation to deliver programs and projects, and have a good understanding of project design principles.
  • Provide advice to the statutory planning team on major development proposals to ensure that new developments pay due attention to the needs of people using active transport modes by making sure that sufficient bicycle parking and walking facilities are provided, and it that meets best practice design requirements to prioritise active transport.
  • Organise events in Yarra that get people to think about their travel choices, such as the Ride to Work program.
  • Build and maintain relationships and partnerships with people and organisations across the municipality to achieve Yarra's sustainable transport goals
  • Be able to assist with strategy development, write Council reports and independently manage inquiries from the general public as needed
  • Work effectively and negotiate and compromise with others as needed to deliver projects and programs.
  • Have good written and verbal communication skills.

This work is focussed on the principle that a large number of small but effective interventions can collectively make a big difference to encourage people to walk and cycle.
