Position context

The Colac Otway Shire Council is seeking a Coordinator Emergency Management to join the team in a permanent full time position.

The term ‘emergency’ is used to describe a situation that:

  • is happening now (or is about to happen)
  • puts the health and safety of people and animals in danger
    (or has the potential to do this) and/or
  • threatens to damage or destroy properties and the environment.

Local government’s emergency management role is to reduce the likelihood and consequences of emergencies on communities and the environment by facilitating multi agency and community planning, supporting response and leading community relief and recovery after the immediate impacts have passed.  Councils utilise a variety of approaches and local arrangements to best deliver these responsibilities to meet unique local needs.  

Most of the activities carried out by councils occur in close conjunction with, or with direct support by, government departments and agencies. Local arrangements are specified in Municipal Emergency Management Plans, developed by multi-agency Municipal Emergency Management Planning Committees.  Supporting our communities to improve their resilience in emergencies is also a critical emergency management strategy.

As the Coordinator Emergency Management, you will ensure that Council:

  • Supports our community to prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergency events.
  • Collaborates with other emergency management and community safety organisations to develop emergency management capability in the Shire.
  • Facilitates the development and implementation of Colac Otway Shire’s Municipal Emergency Management Plan. 
  • Delivers its emergency management obligations in ways that deliver positive community and environmental outcomes.
  • Coordinates its resources and activities that impact emergency management outcomes efficiently and effectively.

The successful applicant will be required to hold the relevant tertiary qualifications and/or have experience in emergency management, fire prevention management within local government, CFA or other relevant authority.

Salary information: $93,904.20 to $103,858.56 per annum plus superannuation.
