 Agency overview

 The Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ) is the lead agency under the Stronger Communities Cluster. DCJ works to enable everyone's right to access justice and help for families through early intervention and inclusion, with benefits for the whole community. Stronger Communities is focussed on achieving safe, just, inclusive and resilient communities by providing services that are effective and responsive to community needs. For the first time, the creation of DCJ and Stronger Communities provides an opportunity to focus on prevention and early intervention across both the social welfare and justice systems.

The Aboriginal Strategy Coordination and Evaluation unit where this role is located works to deliver the systems change needed to create trust and leadership in our communities and improve quality of life outcomes for Aboriginal children and families.

About the role

The role of Senior Program Officer provides strategic program management services across a large-scale strategic program or a range of smaller programs which directly contribute to better outcomes for individuals, families, groups and communities.

This role is in the Aboriginal Strategy – Child and Family team and provides policy and practice advice from a cultural perspective to department stakeholders. The Senior Program Officer is responsible for strategic program development, implementation and coordination across the Children and Family project portfolio with stakeholders from a range of department business areas.

Key functions include supporting the design and delivery of services to Aboriginal children and families, and supporting the redesign of DCJ approach to Aboriginal people.

The role reports to the Manager Aboriginal Strategy – Child and Family in the Strategy Policy Commissioning Partnerships division and is accountable for delivery to:

  • Aboriginal stakeholders
  • community organisations and peak groups
  • department executive
  • cross divisional clients and public facing services staff

 Essential requirements of the role

  • Tertiary qualifications in a related discipline and/or equivalent knowledge, skills and experience with demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development.
  • “It is an essential requirement of the role that successful applicants will have had their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine by 1 December 2021 and their second dose by 17 January 2022.”

About you

In addition to meeting the essential requirements, the successful candidate must demonstrate strong capabilities in:

  • Developing business relationship between central office function and department clients by acting as a central liaison point for strategic engagements across organisational divisions to improve outcomes for Aboriginal children and families
  • Ensuring that program planning incorporates cultural considerations and program delivery supports department goals
  • Assisting clients in the development of project plans and program logic to deliver systems change
  • Leading the analysis and consolidation of relevant information to support strategic policy development and implementation
  • Coordination and implementation of new and existing services and/or business processes.
