Deakin’s School of Psychology is one of the largest and most progressive psychology departments in Australia. We are one of five Schools within the Faculty of Health, and have a strong presence in Melbourne, Geelong and Warrnambool. At undergraduate level, almost a third of our students study online while they live and work in places as distant as Alaska, as remote as the North-West Kimberley, or as nearby as Box Hill.

The Lecturer will be required to lead the design of curriculum and learning materials, and teach in the area of counselling in an online learning environment. In addition, it is desirable that they undertake research, publish and attract research funding. The appointee will promote the School and maintain links and partnerships with relevant academic, industry and professional communities. The appointee will make an independent contribution to the School’s teaching, research, and program development.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Leading the development of a course material for new online counselling units
  • Teaching in the area of counselling and psychology in general but with a particular focus on counselling at the postgraduate level that is consistent with the University’s principles of teaching, learning and the student experience
  • Developing online learning environments that are flexible, student centred and accessible, and utilising appropriate technology
  • Contributing to research, scholarly publication and the generation of research funding
  • Developing and nurturing links and partnerships with industry, professional bodies and the wider community
  • Supervising research and honours students, ensuring successful completions and the quality of results
  • Contributing to the administration of the School and/or Faculty

To be successful, you’ll have:

  • Masters or Bachelors qualification in a relevant field
  • Experience in the design, preparation and delivery of University teaching and learning in the areas of on and off-campus, lifelong learning and flexible and on-line delivery
  • Ability to develop curricula and resources that reflect an understanding of counselling and psychology
  • Demonstrated ability in the design and development of premium online learning resources
  • Experience in teaching counselling at the post-graduate level
  • Ability to make a significant contribution to the Faculty’s teaching programs in counselling and psychology through personal teaching and academic leadership
  • Ability to contribute to the Faculty’s undergraduate and post graduate teaching programs in a manner that influences, motivates and inspires students to learn
  • Ability to develop and administer assessment regimes and provide feedback that fosters independent learning
  • Experience with e-learning tools
  • Experience in mentoring junior academic staff
