Based in Hobart, this is a rare and exciting opportunity for a motivated lawyer (or equivalent) to join EDO Tasmania.

EDO Tasmania is a community legal centre specialising in public interest environmental law and policy. Our mission is to help the community protect the environment through the law.

As an EDO Tasmania lawyer, you will have the opportunity to work on the pressing environmental issues facing Tasmania, including marine farming, forestry and land clearing, protecting the Tarkine and the integrity of the Tasmanian wilderness and public land. You will also work on a project to identify barriers to accessing information about decisions that affect Tasmania’s environment.

This role will:

  • Advise the public on matters of public interest environment and planning law
  • Work on a reform project to address provide better access to information about environmental decision-making
  • Contribute to the litigation, community education and law reform work of EDO Tasmania.

You are a motivated lawyer (or equivalent) with:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills suited to a range of audiences, including plain English drafting and ability to communicate with members of the public
  • A commitment to the protection of the environment
  • A demonstrated ability to work productively and to deadlines
  • A demonstrated ability to develop and maintain good relationships with clients from a diverse range of backgrounds

Applicants that can demonstrate some or all of the following are preferred:

  • Understanding of, and experience with, Tasmanian environment and planning law and policy or that of an equivalent jurisdiction
  • Understanding of right to information laws (freedom of information)
  • At least one year post-admission experience
  • Quantitative or qualitative research experience

Excellent working conditions are offered. Salary range is SCHADS Award Bands 3 or 4, subject to experience and qualifications, plus 9.5% superannuation and 4 weeks annual leave.

The contract is full time or part time (full time preferred) for 12 months, with the possibility of extension (subject to funding).
