Advance evidence-based policy solutions

Policy analysts at AERO contribute to high-quality education policy analysis and engagement in early childhood and schooling that aims to deliver high-impact findings that can be easily accessed, understood and implemented by education practitioners and policymakers. AERO is currently looking for two senior policy analysts for the Policy Division team at AERO. The Policy Division develops strategies to support evidence-based policymaking for schools, including supporting systems to promote evidence-based teaching practice and improve student outcomes.

Senior policy analyst (evidence-based teaching practice) 

The senior policy analyst will work closely with a small team to develop strategies to support systems to promote evidence-based teaching practice. Key tasks will include analysing and summarising the research on evidence-based instruction and constructing compelling narratives, working directly with individual systems seeking to embed evidence-based instruction in policies and strategies, producing guidance for systems on implementation in collaboration with internal stakeholders, and engaging with external stakeholders to promote evidence-based teaching practices.  

We are looking for someone who has: 

  • Excellent understanding of the Australian education landscape and policy frameworks. This may be experience gained through working in policy settings and/or through leadership positions in schools. 
  • Knowledge and understanding of teaching practice, preferably gained through classroom experience or through extensive experience working with practitioners.  
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to create compelling narratives for diverse audiences. This may be experience gained through developing evidence-based resources for policymakers or practitioners. 
  • Highly developed conceptual and analytical skills, including the ability to translate technical and complex information concisely for diverse audiences. This may be through experience developing practical evidence-based resources for practitioners and policymakers. 
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively maintain productive working relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders, including policymakers, practitioners and researchers.
  • Experience in collaborating with a team to deliver complex, high-quality products under tight timelines with competing priorities.  

Accountabilities: 

  • Undertake advanced policy research and analysis, including investigating and critically analysing issues and opportunities relating to education 
  • Develop and implement strategies to maximise the influence of AERO’s research on system programs and policies.   
  • Provide high quality policy advice on a wide variety of issues in education, including schools, child and student outcomes, and evidence use in practice. 
  • Prepare, convene and facilitate workshops for stakeholders, and implement effective follow-up to maximise stakeholder engagement and dissemination of AERO’s work. 
  • Prepare advice and recommendations to internal and external stakeholders that conveys complex concepts and information on education topics in an appropriate format and manner. 
  • Supervise team members as required, ensuring deliverables are on time and to a high standard. 
  • Advise and support other AERO teams as required, with a particular focus on ensuring effective incorporation of AERO’s strategic policy agenda in their work.
