Electric Vehicle Council

About the job

The transition to electric vehicles (EVs) has the potential to significantly reduce carbon emissions, unlock substantial economic gains, and save lives by mitigating tailpipe pollution. To ensure Australia meets its emission reduction targets and capitalises on major economic opportunities, we are actively seeking motivated people to join our growing team.

The job description below is a guide to what we’re looking for. If you’re unsure whether you meet all the criteria but are passionate about fostering change in the EV landscape, especially in electric buses and trucks, we encourage you to apply.

About Us

The Electric Vehicle Council (EVC) is the national peak body representing the EV industry in Australia. Our mission is clear: to accelerate the electrification of transport for a sustainable and prosperous Australia, which we achieve primarily by developing and advocating for effective EV policies. Our membership comprises companies that build, power and support EVs and related infrastructure. Headquartered in Sydney, we have teams located in Melbourne and Brisbane.

About the Role

The EVC’s scope encompasses both the transport and energy sectors, reflective of our diverse membership base. While this role involves supporting the policy team across these areas, we are seeking a Policy Officer / Senior Policy Officer to take the lead in advancing our electric heavy vehicle policy initiatives, with a focus on electric buses and trucks. This is a unique opportunity to influence the electrification of Australia's bus and truck fleets, with the potential to make a substantial impact on emissions and urban air quality. You can read one of our recent reports on supporting the adoption of electric trucks here.

  • Develop and communicate sound policy submissions and advice to government and industry stakeholders.
  • Draft clear, concise, high-quality documents that facilitate transparent communication about policy matters.
  • Analyse electric bus and truck consumption and charging data to inform policy development, cost-effectiveness, and emissions impact.
  • Provide project management and support services, including discussion papers, briefs, and project plans to drive policy initiatives.
  • Collaborate closely with all EVC staff and members to contribute to strategic planning and decision-making.

Our Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • Strong analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead policy development, manage competing priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Capacity to process and adapt information quickly to deliver clear policy insights.
  • Familiarity with or willingness to learn about international and Australian EV technology and policy.
  • Ability to stay informed about extensive research, policy, and government initiatives, preferably related to electric vehicles.
  • While specific qualifications are not essential, a degree in law, policy, economics, social sciences, engineering or related disciplines is preferred.
  • Proven project management skills, including stakeholder engagement and reporting.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Passion for advancing sustainable transport.
  • Familiarity with the bus and truck industry is a bonus.

Additional Criteria for Senior Policy Officer

  • Demonstrated ability to manage staff, budgets, and contractual obligations.
