- Regional VIC > Lake Tyers
Lake Tyers Aboriginal Trust is a small, 4000-acre reserve in far East Gippsland. First established in 1861 by Reverend Bulmer as a mission, Lake Tyers Trust was bought under state government control in 1908 and in 1957 came within the jurisdiction of the Victorian Welfare Board.
In July 1971 after a considerable campaign to support the land rights of the Aboriginal people of Lake Tyers Trust, the freehold title of the Trust was handed to ninety-one shareholders, and it was the first time in Australian history that an unconditional freehold title was awarded to Aboriginal people.
This was the first success of the Aboriginal land rights movement. One of the proposals, ten years prior to the handover of title was to create a management committee of elected representatives of the reserve to manage the Trust, originally as a farming cooperative.
The Trust today has farmland and cattle, 45 residential tenanted houses, an administration building with a Centrelink office, several sheds and infrastructure, historic buildings, a men’s shed, church and cemeteries, essential services infrastructure, and a self-managing health service.
The role of Trust Manager presents an exciting opportunity for a passionate leader and experienced manager who is committed to supporting strong, safe, thriving, self-determining, Aboriginal communities. The Trust Manager will ensure that every individual is treated with dignity and respect whilst working collaboratively with the Chairman, Committee of Management, Management and all Trust staff and community.
This role provides the opportunity to be immersed in and learn from the strength, warmth, and holistic approach of Aboriginal Culture.
Lake Tyers is located 25 minutes from Lake's Entrance and 53 minutes from Bairnsdale East Gippsland. The area is ideal for bushwalking, fishing or enjoying the nearby beaches.
