Forensicare is the statutory agency responsible for the provision of adult forensic mental health services across Victoria. Forensicare is situated across five sites across Victoria with its largest site being Thomas Embling Hospital, located in Fairfield just 15 minutes north of the Melbourne CBD.

Thomas Embling Hospital is a 136 bed secure hospital providing acute care, rehabilitation and continuing.

About the Role:

Within an inpatient setting, the Enrolled Nurse Grade 2 will contribute to the assessment of patients, and the planning, implementation and evaluation of a high standard of patient care.

Duties:

  • Demonstrates ability to observe changes in the patient's physical, social and psychological state.
  • Participates in the assessment and care planning for individual patients, with supervision, support and direction from the Registered Psychiatric Nurse.
  • Encourages and facilitates the involvement of clients and carers in treatment planning.
  • Administers medication to patients as a part of their broader treatment plan.
  • Adheres to security policies and procedures, including participating in patient escorts.
  • Contributes to the maintenance of a therapeutic environment for patients.
  • Demonstrates competence with pathology procedures within scope of practice and completion of appropriate training.
  • Under supervision, support and with direction, carries out basic therapeutic or rehabilitative tasks with patients, either individually or in groups.
  • Participates in identifying issues suitable for quality activity projects at a unit level.

Skills and experience:

  • Effective communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to mental health consumer recovery.
  • Experience in a psychiatric setting (forensic experience desirable).

Mandatory qualifications & registrations:

  • Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulations Agency (AHPRA)
  • Demonstrated ability to perform basic nursing assessments of patients, and to contribute to the planning, implementing and evaluating of interventions.
  • Ability to gain an understanding of psychiatric nursing principles.
  • Ability to gain an understanding of the Mental Health Act 2014, Sentencing Act 1991 and the Crimes (Mental Impairment and Unfitness to be Tried) Act 1997.
