About the role

As a key member of the Climate Emergency and Environment team, the Biodiversity and Climate Adaptation Lead is responsible for designing and delivering projects which support residents and businesses to insulate themselves against climate change impacts and motivate our community to protect and increase biodiversity. 

Other responsibilities include: 

  • Working closely with internal and external stakeholders, to develop partnerships and programs that support community members to protect themselves from climate change impacts and promote biodiversity.
  • Supporting the actions of local communities and community organisations to run community-based biodiversity and adaptation projects.
  • Reviewing and leading the development of Council’s biodiversity plan  
  • Undertaking research and engaging with the community to increase Council’s knowledge and understanding of the local population segments who are particularly exposed to climate change risks, their needs and barriers to action.
  • Engaging with Traditional Owners to incorporate cultural knowledge into community engagement and climate adaptation
  • Engaging with the community, local landowners/occupiers and owners/renters to plant and grow vegetation including trees within their property, with a priority for indigenous plantings where possible. 
  • Delivering and expanding on gardening and citizen science programs.
  • Developing communications resources and materials.
  • From time to time, supervising contractors or other staff to implement projects. 

About you

You will possess knowledge in one or more of the key strategic issues of climate adaptation, community resilience or biodiversity management, as well as highly developed interpersonal skills with the ability to develop a rapport with diverse stakeholders and maintain cooperative relationships. 

The following is also required: 

  • Tertiary qualifications in climate adaptation, community development, natural resource management or related discipline with relevant experience, or less formal qualifications with substantial experience.
  • Significant experience working in the fields of sustainability, environmental management or community resilience.
  • Strong research, report writing, and written and verbal communication skills 
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing projects 
  • Proficiency in MS Office packages

Important Information

Please note the successful candidate must be willing to undergo a police records check and working with children check, and a pre-employment medical for the purpose of employment. 

Where required, in accordance with relevant current State Government Pandemic Orders for vaccination requirements, the successful candidate will need to demonstrate evidence of approved COVID-19 vaccination or authorised medical exemption for relevant roles.
