  • $90,139 – $101,947 per annum (depending on skills and experience), including an all-incidence allowance of $9,411 per annum, plus employer's contribution to superannuation and annual leave loading.

About the role

The office of Kobi Shetty MP has an exciting opportunity for a dynamic person to join our small and passionate team as a communications and media specialist. The position is a permanent full-time position based in the Glebe Electorate Office.

The Communications and Media Officer will be a key strategic advisor to the Member, including political strategy on areas of portfolio responsibility, advising on and negotiating communications, media and other strategies and issues relevant to the electorate.

About the position 

The Senior Electorate Officer supports the local Member of Parliament in their representation of local constituents, through both networks of government and non-government organisations.

The electorate office of Balmain is the direct link to NSW State Parliament for local constituents, advocating on their behalf to various government and non-government agencies to deliver progressive, inclusive outcomes for the whole community. 

Key responsibilities include:

Communications and media:

  • Develop and execute a public narrative strategy for all Member communications and ensure messaging guidelines are adhered to across all communications channels
  • Develop and implement media strategies and identify and pursue proactive and reactive media opportunities
  • Write and edit Member outreach materials
  • Project manage design, printing and distribution of community engagement collateral
  • Produce digital content for Member’s website and social media channels and provide advice to the Member on strategies for better online engagement
  • Provide creative direction on Member outreach materials

Policy:

  • Research policy and provide information and advice to the Member on a broad range of policy issues relating to the Balmain electorate and state wide policy matters
  • Remain informed on local concerns and issues

Community engagement:

  • Proactively identify opportunities for new community campaigns and engagement

  • Excellent writing skills including the ability to prepare correspondence, briefing notes, submissions, speeches, newsletters and media releases
  • Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to liaise with community stakeholder groups, government and non-government organisations and the media
  • Proven track record in media and policy work
  • Demonstrated online communications and community engagement skills including content creation and administration, website management and social media engagement
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and work to tight deadlines in a dynamic environment
  • Capacity to comprehend complex issues, think strategically and adapt to changing circumstances, and demonstrated sound political judgement
  • Excellent computer skills across all Microsoft Office platforms, social media platforms, database packages and internet and email programs
  • Demonstrated superior organisational skills, strong attention to detail, capacity to exercise judgement and ability to work both individually and within a team environment
  • A respect for sensitive and confidential information
  • Enthusiasm, initiative and ability to work effectively and amicably under pressure

Experience/Knowledge/Personal Qualities (desirable)

  • Detailed knowledge of and commitment to the policies and principles of The Greens NSW
  • Experience of working with, or in a political organisation
  • An interest in, and thorough understanding of, the NSW political context
  • Graphic design skills and video editing skills
  • Relevant tertiary qualification
  • Experience in community organising and campaigning in a political, community or environmental organisation
  • Online communications and campaigns skills including content creation and administration, website management and social media engagement
  • Experience with customer relationship management databases
