ROLE SUMMARY
The Creative Director/CEO will nurture and evolve HRAFF into its 17th year and beyond. The role is responsible for leading the overall vision, strategy, and creative direction of the organisation in collaboration with the Board and HRAFF staff.
This is an exciting opportunity to work with top artistic talent and passionate community leaders and advocates, develop and deliver organisational priorities in alignment with strategy, deepen and develop new partnerships, and cultivate an organisational culture that is committed to human rights.
You will be supported by a committed and passionate HRAFF Board who want to enable you to succeed. Once the organisation secures multi-year core funding there will be an opportunity to renegotiate salary.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Creative Direction
- Lead the creative direction of the organisation and annual festival.
- Develop initiatives, models and programs of creative output that support HRAFF’s theory of change
- Support staff to develop key objectives and undertake programming and planning for HRAFF events, including the annual festival.
- Support staff to expand the Emerging Filmmakers Fund in alignment with organisational strategy.
- Represent HRAFF in key engagement activities with funders, government and donors.
Major Event Delivery
- Manage the Manager - Operations and Manager - Film Programming to program and deliver a diverse, world-class, culturally preeminent annual Festival which engages, inspires and challenges audiences on human rights issues through film, art and conversation.
- Engage marketing expertise for events and oversee marketing, sales, communications and public relations strategies to enhance HRAFF’s brand locally, nationally and internationally, and to meet revenue targets.
- Monitor and analyse major event delivery and performance, ensuring alignment with organisational strategy, respond to risks to delivery, and commit to continuously improve the delivery of events.
Partnerships and Business Development
- Ensure HRAFF is financially sustainable. Strengthen existing partnerships and actively grow new revenue-generating activities – including corporate, philanthropic and government funding.
- Actively network and build strong relationships with stakeholders to increase HRAFF’s profile, grow audience engagement and secure financial and in-kind support.
- Identify and develop potential entrepreneurial opportunities.
- Manage deliverables under funding contracts including funded events, reporting requirements and acquittals.
- Represent HRAFF in public and external stakeholder engagement activities including at major events.
Organisational Leadership and Human Resource Management
- Cultivate a dynamic, resilient and inclusive culture at HRAFF that supports staff to embed the organisation’s values in their day-to-day work.
- Lead, manage and recruit (when necessary) core HRAFF team and consultants.
- Oversee the recruitment and management of HRAFF volunteers with support from the Manager - Operations and Manager - Film Programming.
- Provide the team with clear direction, budget-lines and deliverables.
- Provide opportunities for staff to develop their skills, and provide feedback on performance.
- Support the Manager - Operations to develop systems and procedures necessary for the efficient operation of the organisation.
- Ensure the organisation complies with all relevant laws, regulations and reporting requirements.
Strategy and Governance
- Develop and execute organisational plans and budgets to deliver on HRAFF’s strategy.
- Prepare and manage budgets, implement financial controls and monitor financial risks.
- Prepare and present timely and detailed reports on strategy, financial sustainability, human resources and risk to the HRAFF Board.

Experience:

- Strong creative vision and strategy
- Strong ability to monitor and manage a budget, ensuring outcomes are delivered within scope
- Experience in overseeing, managing and improving systems and processes
- Strong administrative, organisation and project management experience
- Experience in high-level negotiations and contracts
- Knowledge of the film industry, both nationally and internationally (desirable)
- Knowledge of and connections in the arts industry in Australia, and Melbourne specifically (desirable)
- Experience delivering festivals and events (desirable)
- Experience managing a volunteer workforce (desirable)
- Experience with fundraising (desirable)
