Building on over five years of experience providing renovations and repairs to crisis and transitional accommodation, Habitat Women is now offering building and maintenance services to Specialist Homelessness Services and Community Housing Providers, with an initial focus on crisis and transitional accommodation for women.

Habitat Women Building and Maintenance Services offers both:

  • an all-female program - providing training and upskilling of basic construction skills and creating awareness of opportunities in the construction industry,
  • as well as a social enterprise - providing building and maintenance to Specialist Homelessness Services and Community Housing Providers.

Your role will be the Supervisor of these services.

Habitat Women provides a safe space for women, and an environment to improve their awareness of what is available in the construction industry and be supported in activities and actions to develop a path into the industry.

We train small cohorts of pre-apprentice tradespeople through both workshop and on-site build activities. At the end of their 6-month cohort, Habitat then assists in seeking follow-on positions for these women with partnering organisations or internally within the Habitat Women maintenance team.

This position will be the Supervisor of these small teams for all related activities.

The Supervisor will act as the key liaison point with stakeholders and the office support team, whilst co-ordinating and supervising this small team of pre-apprentice tradespeople.

The Supervisor position is responsible for organisation of all build projects and maintenance activities and supervising and leading the team to complete the various projects and provide guidance and positive support. Building / construction skills andexperience are essential. The position is also responsible for some project management, coordination, documentation, and reporting.

The supervisor undertakes a range of functions including -

  • Managing small maintenance projects for our partner companies
  • Programming the works to meet agreed timelines
  • Knowledge of, and adherence to, WH&S requirements
  • Ability to oversee and train aspiring tradespeople
  • Co-ordinate up to 15hours of work packages per week for each team over the 6-month programme
  • Using their building / construction skills and experience to guide, support and upskill the maintenance team members
  • Ability to advise on appropriate solutions for building work projects
  • Liaising with clients and customers, suppliers, sub-contractors
  • Scheduling and running small work packages
  • Organising and managing maintenance packages covered by a scope of work agreed and quoted for the Client
  • Managing all logistics for maintenance activities, including tools, equipment, vehicle loading, food, drinks, and other amenities for maintenances
  • Managing tools, equipment, and materials efficiently and effectively
  • Driving the ute, with trailer, to each site activity
  • Ensuring a safe working environment and proactively encouraging safe working practices
  • Providing information and safety presentation to teams for all activities
  • Preparing brief reports
  • Managing maintenance team’s work to ensure projects are completed on schedule and to a high standard
  • Tasks to support the efficient and effective operation of the program

Essential Selection Criteria

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience working in residential construction,
  • Strong knowledge of Australian Building Codes
  • Strong knowledge of safety requirements on construction sites
  • Trade Qualification in Carpentry or similar (essential)
  • Full unencumbered driver's licence (essential)
  • Builders licence, or requisite qualifications to obtain one (essential)
  • Excellent presentation, strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Enthusiasm to engage with a small team program focused on construction activities
  • Ability to support, motivate, supervise, and work with up to 6 unskilled site labour participants working on building maintenance activities
