Australian Human Rights Commission Anti-Racism Campaign Expert Advisory Group

Australian Human Rights Commission

The Australian Human Rights Commission (Commission) is seeking Expressions of Interest to fill one vacancy on its Racism. It Stops With Me Expert Advisory Group (EAG).

Background

In June 2021, the Commission established an EAG to advise on the development and relaunch of its national anti-racism campaign, Racism. It Stops With Me. In 2023, this EAG committed to continuing work with the Commission on new campaigns and public awareness initiatives under the National Anti-Racism Strategy. Following extensive consultation the Commission has updated its EAG membership appointment process. When membership opportunities arise on EAGs for anti-racism initiatives an open call for nominations via an expression of interest will be made.

Purpose of the EAG

The EAG meets 2-3 times each year, with meetings conducted online. EAG members may voluntarily participate in additional, ad-hoc meetings on specific issues as required.

The EAG exists to:

  • provide information and expertise on best practice anti-racism, racial literacy and opportunities for collaboration and partnerships
  • guide the development of campaign strategies, including general strategic direction and strategies that relate to consultation, community engagement, supporter engagement, social media and public awareness
  • support meaningful, respectful and relational engagements with community networks, potential partners and collaborators.

From 2023-2026, the campaign will seek to promote education and public awareness, build racial literacy, and support the development of a national anti-racism strategy. It will aim to:

  • encourage personal and collective understanding of systemic racism, and action to address it,
  • support, facilitate and recognise efforts by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and those from other negatively racialised communities, who are surviving and resisting racism and leading anti-racism in Australia.
The Commission aims to take a human rights-based approach to all campaign and public awareness initiatives. This will include:
  • centring the experiences and perspectives of First Nations peoples and others from negatively racialised communities, who have led anti-racism action and advocacy in Australia for many years
  • focussing on community strengths
  • seeking to minimise harm for those negatively impacted in a system of white supremacy
  • taking a strengths-based, trauma-informed and intersectional approach, and
  • grounding community engagement in reciprocity, relationality and respect.

To encourage openness and sharing of information, EAG meetings are conducted in accordance with the Chatham House Rule.

Remuneration

In recognition of their time and expertise, a sitting fee of $200 is available to all EAG members for each additional $100 available per hour after that. The total sitting fee is intended to allow time for members to engage in pre-reading and other ad-hoc communications.

Who should apply?

The Commission is seeking applications from those who:

  1. have demonstrated understanding of racism, including how multiple forms of discrimination and harm intersect with and compound one another
  2. have experience in anti-racism, public awareness and/or campaigns
  3. have experience working in collaborative environments towards systemic change

Formal experience in the above is not required. When considering applicants, the Commission will also take into account lived experience.

First Nations people, people from negatively racialised communities, and people with lived experience at the intersections of different forms of discrimination are strongly encouraged to apply.
