OVERVIEW

Do you want to help break the cycle of intergenerational trauma and be a part of a passionate Aboriginal led organisation that helps reconnect kids to their culture and empower them to make positive choices? If so, we'd love to hear from you!

We are looking for an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander identifying Youth Mentor to be a part of our team. You would be providing support to young Aboriginal people who are living in out-of-home care or who have been in contact with the juvenile justice system. You will also be helping facilitate our group sessions that run twice a week after school where we engage the kids in a number of activities like yarn time, art workshops, sport, cooking and more.

ID. Know Yourself is a non-for-profit that was Founded by Isaiah Dawe who has had first hand experience growing up in the foster system. We are a hands on, inclusive and passionate organisation full of people who are committed to creating real change. The aim is to fill the gaps for our young people aged 7-16 years old by providing love, consistency and holistic support that gives young people living in out of home care the chance to establish belonging, purpose and empowerment.

KEY RESPOSIBILITIES OF THE ROLE

  • Mentoring support
  • Community engagement and program promotion
  • Working with young people
  • Organisational participation
  • Group Facilitator

THIS ROLE WILL INCLUDE:

  • Provide a welcoming and safe environment for young people
  • Promote the safety and wellbeing of young people on the program
  • Mentor and support young people both one on one and in group sessions
  • Coordinate and facilitate weekly meetings for young people
  • Establish, monitor and support the achievement of goals for young people
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with our stakeholders including Department of Community and Justice, Juvenile Justice, Koori Court, employment pathway partners, program delivery partners and volunteer network
  • Develop, coordinate, facilitate and attend group sessions for young people
  • Transporting kids to and from group sessions Advocating with caseworks and cares around needs for our young people
  • Taking down case notes and record after each interaction with the young people, 1:1 and after group session
  • Assist with development and presentation of information sessions
  • Participating in Corporate, government and other stakeholder events with the kids building respectful positive experiences
  • Participate in planning and other organisational activities
  • Participate in IDKY’s performance development processes
  • Complete necessary administration and reporting accurately and on time and provide regular reports when required

YOU WILL HAVE:

  •  The passion and energy to support and help empower young people ages 7-19 years old
  • Experience working with young people from vulnerable communities
  • To be Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational requirement of this role in accordance with the provisions of Section 14d of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977
  • Reception and open to professional development, growth and feedback on how to better yourself
  • Transparent communication
  • Proven understanding and knowledge of Aboriginal peoples, their culture and communities
  • Demonstrated experience in working with Aboriginal young people, preferably in a mentoring capacity
  • Relevant qualifications and / or sector experience
  • Demonstrated initiative, ability to work autonomously exercising sound judgement
  • Demonstrated ability to follow systems and processes to maintain accurate records
  • Up to date to Working with Children Check, national police check and first aid
  • A current NSW driver's license
  • Availability to work between 7am and 7pm and from time to time work weekends
  • Proof of COVID-19 Vaccination

WORK ENVIRONMENT

You will be working with an energetic passionate team committed to our young people and mission. The role will be working from our shared office space in the city which is open planned, plenty of meeting rooms, phone booths and complimentary snacks, drinks, breakfast, and lunch provided each day. Our culture is inclusive, open, and appreciative of everyone’s ideas and contributions. Your role will include both in person and virtual meetings and workshops.
