Link-Up (NSW) Aboriginal Corporation was founded in 1980 to assist all Aboriginal people who had been directly affected by past government policies; being separated from their families and culture through forced removal, being fostered, adopted or raised in institutions.

Link-Up (NSW) supports the healing journeys of those removed; delivering professional, culturally sensitive and confidential research, reunions and Social, Emotional and Wellbeing services to those over the age of eighteen.

We are seeking a motivated and suitably experienced and qualified person to join Link-Up (NSW) Closing the Gap team as a Policy Officer.

NSW CAPO and Closing the Gap

The NSW Coalition of Aboriginal Peak Organisations (NSW CAPO) is a coalition of peak Aboriginal community-controlled organisations in NSW. NSW CAPO provides a strong, coordinated, and united voice to address Aboriginal rights, which include, but are not limited to, health, education, housing, employment, legal equality, culture and heritage, child and family supports, disability, social justice, LGBTQI+, economic development and promoting respect for human rights. NSW CAPO has signed the National Agreement on Closing the Gap and is working in partnership with the NSW Government to develop a NSW Jurisdictional Plan.

The NSW CAPO provides a forum for member organisations to discuss, share, and exchange information.

Policy Officer: 24-month temporary position (as per funding agreement) Applications from Aboriginal people are strongly encouraged.

As a part of the partnership arrangements between NSW CAPO and the NSW Government, the NSW Government has provided grant funding to NSW CAPO organisations to support Closing the Gap work, including employment of Closing the Gap staff.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Policy Officer provides detailed and informed policy advice on a range of complex policy issues including advice in the development of the NSW Jurisdictional Plan, developing CAPO Closing the Gap policy positions, promoting CAPO’s Closing the Gap policy positions to key stakeholders, preparing quality reports, submissions, briefing papers and correspondence.

Essential Criteria

  • Aboriginality is a genuine requirement and is authorised by Section 14d of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.
  • Must be able to work 35 hours per week.
  • Currently working 4 days in the office.
  • Demonstrated commitment and capacity to promote the rights interests and aspirations of Aboriginal people;
  • Demonstrated experience in community engagement in an Aboriginal community context;
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills with the ability to build effective relationships with Aboriginal peoples and communities and to collaborate to achieve their objectives;
  • Effective and well-developed time management skills to plan workload, prioritise and meet deadlines;
  • Demonstrable personal drive, integrity and capacity to work in a team;
  • Must be able to travel within NSW.
  • Relevant tertiary qualification ( Community Services, Social Work, Social Science, Policy writing).
