Metro Assist Limited (formerly Metro Migrant Resource Centre) is seeking a qualified and experienced Caseworker to be part of a vital service that focuses on newly arrived migrant and refugee communities.

Metro Assist provides settlement and multicultural services, family services, emergency relief, tenancy advice, financial counselling and undertakes community development projects and initiatives. More information about Metro Assist is available on our website www.metroassist.org.au.

The Settlement Services Program aims to assist clients to become self-reliant, participate fully in the broader community and successfully access mainstream services in Canterbury-Bankstown region with a focus on eligible SGP clients from the Canterbury Community Hub member communities, but not limited to them. The Canterbury Community Hub members include Sudanese women, Sudanese Youth, Sierra Leone Women, Sierra Leone youths, Burmese Rohingya community, Somali community and Northern African communities. The Project will work in collaboration with the Metro MRC SGP Small and Emerging Communities Project to implement projects that will target the Canterbury Community Hub members groups as well as the general SGP groups in the Canterbury-Bankstown areas.

This will be achieved through casework, referrals and group information sessions. Community development will be facilitated by assisting community groups to organise, identify needs and plan services to assist their settlement. The project will work in partnership with mainstream service providers to improve client access to these services.

The salary is based on the SCHCADS Award. In addition, a generous tax free salary package is available.  The successful applicant will also benefit from ongoing support, training and flexible working conditions.

Essential selection criteria:

  1. Demonstrated understanding of issues affecting newly arrived migrants and refugees settling in the Canterbury-Bankstown, Marrickville-Inner Sydney and Inner Western Sydney areas.
  2. Tertiary qualifications in health, counselling, behavioural, social sciences or adult education or equivalent experience.
  3. Bilingual in a community language (ideally Rohingya, Bengali, Tamil, Sinhalese)
  4. Demonstrated assessment and casework experience in a cross-cultural context.
  5. Demonstrated knowledge of service providers within the NSW settlement sector.
  6. Proven group work and training skills.
  7. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  8. Knowledge and experience in community development, community liaison and advocacy.
  9. Prepared to undertake a Working With Children Check and National Police Check.

Desirable selection criteria:

  1. Experience in working with community based organisations and a commitment to the values underpinning third sector organisations.
  2. Current NSW driver’s licence and access to a vehicle.
