Senior Doctor - Timor-Leste

Order of Malta

A position is available as the Senior Doctor at the Order of Malta Clinic in Dili, the capital of Timor-Leste, one of the poorest countries in South-East Asia with a population of around 1.2 million people.

The Order of Malta is one of the oldest medical missions in the world and is active in 120 countries caring for the poor and the sick through its medical, social and humanitarian works.

Its 13,500 members, 80,000 permanent volunteers and qualified staff of 25,000 professionals (most of whom are medical personnel and paramedics), form an efficient network that includes everything from hospital work, medical care and social services to emergency relief for refugees and intervention in areas hit by natural disasters.

This new medical clinic will be run by the Order of Malta. It will provide excellent basic primary out of hospital medical care and health education to the people of Timor-Leste. In the initial period, the primary emphasis will be on the care of women and children.

The role

We are looking for a medical graduate of an internationally recognised School of Medicine who can be registered in Timor-Leste as a medical practitioner. Applicants should be:

  • Fluent in English
  • Have at least 5 years practice beyond residency with experience in primary health care, paediatric and maternal health (preferably in a rural and remote setting)
  • Previous experience in a developing country is desirable
  • Experience in administration and supervision of allied health staff is an advantage, as is an interest in teaching.

The position will be challenging but highly satisfying. The successful applicant will take a leading role in the development of this new clinic that will serve the poorest Timorese, in what we believe to be the best facility in the country.

Our vision is to also be involved in the training of health care workers in Timor-Leste, in conjunction with training institutions in Timor-Leste and Australia.

The position will report to the Directors of the Order of Malta Clinic, who are supported by a Medical Advisory Committee of senior clinicians in Australia.

The Clinic

The clinic’s design and physical layout follows the regulations stipulated by healthcare authorities in Australia and the guidelines laid down by the Royal Australasian College of General Practitioners. It is hoped that integration with the healthcare system of Timor-Leste will eventually be achieved.

The facility will operate within the boundaries and teaching of the Roman Catholic faith and the charism of the Order of Malta.

Remuneration: The salary and benefits package will be negotiated and tailored to the applicant.
