A critical role straddling Communications, Fundraising, Marketing and Advocacy, join the RACS team of Human Right's champions and make a difference to the lives of refugees and people seeking asylum. RACS provides free, dedicated legal services to ensure individuals and families, at risk of persecution or other forms of significant harm, gain access to equal and fair representation before the law, and are granted protection by Australia.

The Content Writer & Media Lead’s excellent storytelling skills and media nouse is crucial to attracting the fundraising income the organisation needs to be sustainable, and advocating for positive social change. You will create the sort of content that is impactful and can stand out against others in this not-for-profit space – persuasive, compelling, engaging, creative and, where necessary, provocative.

Key Responsibilities

Content and storytelling

  • Collect client and staff stories, including photos and video footage.
  • Create story packages and use these to write web stories, case studies, social media posts, fundraising appeals, media pitches.
  • Content planning, in collaboration with Head of Engagement & Communications.
  • Coordinate and edit content from staff, interns and volunteers in accordance with content plan.
  • Coordinate photography for the wider RACS team, both at the office and at events.
  • Draft social media content, in collaboration with the Digital Marketing Coordinator.
  • Liaise with RACS’s external consultant on SEO optimisation and Google AdGrants campaigns based on web content.

Media, public relations and advocacy

  • Reactive media: monitor and track media coverage on refugee issues and coordinate media enquiries with RACS spokespeople.
  • Coordinate awards calendar and nominations.
  • Proactive media: draft media releases and pitches, and identify strategic approaches.
  • Co-design advocacy campaigns, including petitions, in collaboration with Head of Engagement & Communications and Policy & Advocacy team.

Essential Selection Criteria

  1. Tertiary qualifications in communications, journalism or marketing or a related discipline, or comparable industry experience.
  2. Demonstrated experience and success in creating exceptional content for media, fundraising, campaign and/ or awareness purposes.
  3. Ability to deliver fast-turnaround content while maintaining brand voice and quality.
  4. Exceptional attention to detail and effective communication skills, particularly in written work.
  5. A commitment to refugee and human rights issues.
  6. Strong initiative and ability to work to deadlines with minimal supervision.
  7. Experience and sensitivity relating to people across different cultures.
  8. Flexibility and adaptability to work within a small team with shifting and unexpected priorities.
