WHO WE are

Living Languages supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to bring back or strengthen their languages, through hands-on, grassroots training. We work with individuals, family groups, Communities, language centres, schools and other organisations who request our support. Together, we tailor programs to help them reach their language goals, their way. We work with people at all stages of their language journeys, whether they’re just starting or have been working with language for years; from language learners to fluent speakers. And we work with all languages, from sleeping to strong.

The Living Languages team works from their home offices, connecting regularly via Zoom, with ICT and Professional Development support.

About the Role

Living Languages is looking for a creative Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person to coordinate our online communications. The casual position involves managing the Living Languages website, newsletter and social media accounts to share information, news and updates about our training and other activities, as well as resources and relevant opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people working with their languages.

You will be passionate about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Languages, sharing stories and connecting with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The Communications Officer works closely with the Living Languages team to create engaging content, update information and ensure our message is clear and consistent across all channels.

This is a casual position; weekly hours will range between 10 and 15 hours per week.

DUTIES

Implement our Digital Communications Strategy to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ language work. You are expected to collaborate closely with the Living Languages team to develop engaging and relevant content, with a focus on:

  • Maintaining our website with updates on our training, resources and associated projects
  • Managing our social media channels, such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn
  • Producing our quarterly newsletter
  • Communicating with our audience through social media, responding to enquiries, and relaying correspondence to the team
  • Ensuring content across all channels is consistent and compatible

essential skills & experience

  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, organisations and communities
  • Ability to communicate clearly in spoken and written form
  • Knowledge of, or interest in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages
  • Experience in social media and website management
  • Confidence in using computers and other IT equipment
  • Ability to work remotely from home
  • Self-motivated and capable of working independently without supervision
  • Good organisational skills, including the ability to prioritise and finish tasks on time
  • Experience in using Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn

desirable skills & Experience

  • Experience in using Microsoft 365 including SharePoint, Outlook and Teams
  • Experience in using Squarespace, Mailchimp
