ABOUT THE ROLE
Senator Lidia Thorpe is seeking a passionate and engaged person to join her team in the role of First Nations Campaigner based at her Melbourne office. This is an exciting position at the heart of the Senator’s work to ensure that First Nations justice remains on the political agenda
The First Nations Campaigner will help formulate and manage the Senator’s First Nations and Treaty Campaigns, coordinate her engagement with the Blak Sovereign Movement and assist First Nations communities and individuals who are seeking support where required. They will also provide support for team meetings and workshops, and undertake general administration duties as required.
PAY AND CONDITIONS
The position is offered under the Members of Parliament (Staff) Act 1984, and employment conditions are outlined in the Members of Parliament (Staff) Enterprise Agreement 2020-2023.
The position is full time and offered at an Electorate Officer B classification with a FTE salary of $81,666 per annum. The role attracts 15.4% superannuation in addition to salary. This role may involve occasional out of hours commitments, for which an additional Electorate Staff Allowance or time off in lieu arrangements may be considered.
This position is a one-year contract, with the possibility of extension and ongoing employment. A 3-months probation period applies.
KEY WORK AREAS
- Developing, implementing and monitoring the Senator’s Treaty campaign and mobilisation tactics that build support for a Treaty. Build support for Truth and Treaty with supporters, the wider community and governments.
- Developing, implementing and monitoring other First Nations campaigns as per the Senator’s strategic agenda, including identification of campaign opportunities and close cooperation with the policy and parliamentary team to most effectively pursue the Senator's objectives
- Coordinating the Senator’s work with the Blak Sovereign Movement (BSM), including attending meetings, implementing required actions, building and maintaining strong communication and relationships across the movement and providing support to the BSM as required
- Supporting the Senator to respond to and connect to First Nations community groups who are advocating for change in their local area on various issues and communicating the work of the Senator to supporters and communities
- Occasionally: Responding to First Nations individuals and groups who request Senator Thorpe’s help or advocacy, assisting them to solve problems and identifying services that might suit their needs

- Desirable: experience in campaigning, social work, community legal, health, mental health, and/or community services, especially with First Nations organisations
