About the Service

The North Coast Settlement Service provides assistance to humanitarian entrants and eligible migrants to become self-sufficient and participate in Australian society as soon as possible and thereby minimise their longer-term reliance on social services.

Assistance is focused on providing eligible clients with activities and services aimed at promoting their economic and personal well-being, independence and community connectedness. Services provided will include pathways to learning English, education and employment readiness.

The Role

The Migrant Settlement Worker will be responsible for the implementation of the signed agreement for services provided under the Settlement Services Program (SSP) funding in the Coffs Harbour LGA between the St Vincent de Paul Society, NSW and the Department of Social Services (DSS). Key responsibilities will include:

  • Providing casework services i.e. interviewing to identify needs and issues that need to be addressed
  • Providing a range of support including coordinating activities that will allow connection/participation in the community; organising culturally and linguistically sensitive group work/information sessions and workshops that will enable them to develop life skills with a focus on English, employment and education
  • Establishing and maintaining links and partnerships with key service providers, community organisations and agencies; participating in community activities to advocate on behalf of clients
  • Performing administrative tasks i.e. maintenance of confidential and accurate client service records and data bases; ensure child protection notifications are made according to Child Protection Guidelines NSW; prepare reports as required

The Migrant Settlement Worker will report to the Manager - North Coast Settlement Services.

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Diploma of Community Services, Certificate III in Community Services or demonstrated equivalent skills and experience in casework, referral, advocacy and community capacity building
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a small team and contribute to planning discussions in regards to agreed work plans
  • Demonstrated high level program management skills and experience including proven ability to multitask, problem-solving, time management and work with minimum supervision.
  • Experience working with culturally diverse and/or vulnerable clients, including knowledge of refugee issues or the ability to acquire such knowledge
  • Demonstrated capacity to plan, support and/or initiate Community Development activities.
  • Demonstrated capacity to develop and maintain functional relationships with key stakeholders and partner organisations.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects/activities within prescribed budget.
