The Organisation
Support Act delivers crisis relief services to musicians, managers, crew, and music workers across all genres who are unable to work due to ill health, injury, mental health, or some other crisis. Support Act services include the Support Act Wellbeing Helpline, funeral support and a range of life-saving mental health prevention, education and training programs. Our First Nations team ensure that we are providing a safe cultural and psychological space for First Nations music workers.

The Role
The First Nations Programs Lead role supports our First Nations team to increase the number of First Nations artists, artist managers, crew and music workers across all genres who are accessing our crisis relief and mental health & wellbeing services. The role is also responsible for developing programs that help provide a First Nations perspective and that encourage greater equity and inclusion for First Nations music workers. It is also responsible for ensuring that we achieve the objectives outlined in our First Nations Strategic Plan.
This is an identified position for an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person. Aboriginality is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised under Section 14(d) of the Anti-discrimination Act 1997.
Key responsibilities include:
- Lead programs and activities to achieve targeted crisis relief, mental health and wellbeing support, social work, and prevention strategies to meet the diverse needs of First Nations music workers
- Build and maintain strong and beneficial relationships with the First Nations music community
- Ensure that Support Act achieves the objectives of their First Nations Strategic Plan
- Work across the organisation to ensure a First Nations perspective on all programs and activities
- Help to develop culturally intelligent policies and processes that ensure that First Nations music workers feel comfortable in engaging with Support Act services
- Help to develop communications materials that will be culturally intelligent and that reflect communications channels that are most favoured by First Nations music workers
- Identify gaps in our programming and develop and implement new programs and funding pathways as needed
Skills Required
You are a highly skilled and enthusiastic program manager who has disciplined work practices and the ability to work independently from home; demonstrated communication and advocacy skills; and demonstrated presentation and public speaking skills. You also have excellent business development and project management skills; and the ability to achieve targets and produce quantifiable outcomes.
You will also need:
- An understanding of, or experience working in, the Australian music industry
- An understanding of the issues facing First Nations music industry workers
- A qualification in mental health, mental health promotion, case management OR a minimum of 3 years’ experience working in a related field.
- Demonstrated experience in the development and implementation of mental health prevention, education and training programs.
- Demonstrated skills in community / industry engagement and relationship building
- Experience working for a not for profit or community-based organisation
- Experience in obtaining and acquitting grant funding, including grant writing
