The Homelessness Melbourne Metro region is a large Homelessness provider in the inner city of Melbourne and provides a comprehensive range of residential & community services across seven sites in St Kilda, Footscray, North Melbourne, West Melbourne, Kensington and Fitzroy. Community programs include the Crisis Contact Centre, Community Outreach Services for single adults, support for older people in public housing, rough sleeper & street sleeping initiatives, community participation and AOD support.

Residential services operate from Foley House in Footscray, the Open Door in North Melbourne and Flagstaff in West Melbourne. Flagstaff and The Open Door residential facilities are part of The Salvation Army Homelessness Stream and operates 24 hours a day, 7 days per week. The two sites provide 101 beds in total for males experiencing homelessness with multiple and complex needs.

Why this role matters

The Community Support Worker participates in the day to day operation of the facility, including providing individualised support to residents, addressing barriers for life and leisure skills, maintaining a safe and secure environment for staff and residents as well as completing administrative duties. In this position, you will be required to complete reports, update records and case notes as well as fulfil other compliance requirements.

This position is permanent full time, located in West Melbourne, close to public transport. Salary and conditions are in accordance with the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Award, Level 4.

What we're looking for

  • Tertiary qualifications in social work, community services or a related field
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to work sensitively with people of diverse cultures, abilities, ages, sexualities and gender identities
  • The ability to identify and use appropriate strategies to deal with challenging or crisis presentations
  • Demonstrated ability to remain calm and take safe and appropriate action for critical incidents
  • Demonstrated understanding of trauma informed care, person centred and strengths based approach
  • Prior experience in residential facilities is preferred, but not essential
  • A current VIC Drivers Licence
  • Valid VIC Employee Working with Children Check
  • Ability to provide proof of Eligibility to Work in Australia
