ABOUT THE CENTRE

The Centre is a Neighbourhood House based in Errol St. North Melbourne.

The Centre is a Neighbourhood House and Learn Local organisation that addresses disadvantage and provides support, community development and educational opportunities. Our aim is to enrich community life for the people and organisations of North Melbourne, West Melbourne, and Docklands to achieve equitable, engaged, connected and inclusive communities.

Our programs are built around the principles of Progression, Connection and Expression.

The Centre currently delivers a range of social and wellbeing programs including after school homework clubs, creative arts, food & social connection programs, Pilates, dance classes, community choir, Viva La Seniors programs, Repair Cafe, group walks, digital literacy, community festivals, a quarterly community newspaper, community meals, advocacy programs and local network co-ordination.

The Centre is recently commissioned a community needs analysis for North & West Melbourne, and there is significant scope to re-design the program in response to the findings of the analysis.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Overview 

The Community Outreach Worker– shall assist The Centre’s Community Development Co-Ordinator in developing local stories for the North & West Melbourne News. The services will include: 

  • Maintain and extend a network within the given communities.
  • Research and develop connections with local people and help them identify and tell their stories.
  • Encourage local people to create their own content for the North & West Melbourne.
  • Collaborate with The Centre’s media team to develop stories from draft to final publication.
  • Act as a key contact person for people from the local communities, their stories, and the media team.
  • Market and Promote North & West Melbourne News and its stories within the local communities.
  • Assist the Community Development Co-Ordinator to identify potential new community development initiatives of relevance to the given communities.
  • Facilitate connections between The Centre and the given communities.
  • Monitor, refine, evaluate, and report progress to Community Development Co-Ordinator.

OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:

Essential

  • Knowledge and understanding of local community issues, challenges, and aspirations. 
  • Established local networks, including access to local community leaders and representatives. 
  • Have high level of oral, written and communication skills in English. 
  • An interest in community journalism .

Desirable

  • Understanding of Neighbourhood House sector.
  • Experience working with culturally diverse communities, including international students.
  • Experience working with older people.
  • Experience in community events and festivals.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and interest in social enterprise.
  • Conversant in one of more languages relevant to our local community.
