About The Lab

The Lab is a national network of not-for-profit tech and games themed social clubs for young people who identify as being on the autism spectrum. Running since 2011, in 2021 over 1,500 participants attended almost 2,000 sessions at more than 35 locations around Australia.

The Lab Network is a not for profit company formed in 2013. The Lab Network provides governance, marketing, recruitment and administrative support for the growing number of local independently operated Labs around the country.

Barriers, disadvantages and missed opportunities at critical developmental stages of young people’s lives can have persistent consequences. This is clearly evident in the shocking 2018 ABS statistics on education and employment outcomes for Australians with autism. People with autism are four times less likely than others to complete a bachelor’s degree; and eight times more likely to be unemployed. The Lab engages and empowers our participants who identify as being on the autism spectrum through the most difficult transitions of their adolescence – from primary into secondary and through to school-leaving age and further education.

The Lab Online also provides four sessions a week of gaming, tech skill development and social engagement for participants from Perth to Townsville. At two-hour weekly sessions participants are supported by tech experienced mentors to explore their interests in social gaming and develop digital media skills within a positive peer based social experience.

The Lab model of locally organised and operated community based activities supported by a national organisation has proved to be highly scalable with great potential for future growth. Community demand for The Lab service is strong and supported by several external evaluations, we have an excellent reputation for delivering a low cost, high quality program supported by committed and talented individuals working as mentors and local Lab organisers.
