The Women’s Hospital provides a comprehensive breast care service in partnership with the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre partners (The Royal Melbourne Hospital). The breast service offers assessment, diagnostic and treatment services to women with benign and malignant breast disease. The breast service employs specialist breast surgeons, medical oncologists, senior breast care nurses and breast care nurses, to provide outpatient and inpatient services. Care is delivered using a multidisciplinary approach, facilitated by regular tumour board and supportive care meetings. The breast care service has a central role in the co-ordination of care throughout diagnosis, treatment and follow up.

Position Purpose

The role of the breast care nurse is to provide clinical nursing leadership for the breast service ensuring continuity of care and follow up for women with breast service requirements. Specifically, the nurse will:

  • In collaboration and consultation with the senior breast care nurse and the multidisciplinary team provide direct care to women with cancer and their carer’s.
  • In consultation with the clinical team, co-ordinate, monitor and review patient treatment plans
  • Facilitate access and referrals to the Women’s Breast care Service as appropriate
  • Manage interdisciplinary communication and relationships relevant to patient care
  • Ensure that services are woman-focused; integrated; consistent and evidenced based

About you

Essential Criteria:

  • Registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia – Registered Nurse
  • Demonstrable clinical experience working in Women’s Health Nursing
  • Developed skills in managing the impact of Breast Cancer on body image and sexuality
  • Demonstrated commitment to high quality health care, quality assurance and evidence-based practice in health care service delivery
  • Experience working effectively in a multidisciplinary team
  • High level communication skills, with demonstrated ability to communicate at all levels
  • Understanding of the purpose of research and evidence based practice in health services
  • Experience using Microsoft applications, relational data base, email and the internet

Desirable Criteria

  • Minimum of 5 years post graduate experience, with 2 of those years spent in a breast or breast oncology service
  • Training and experience in conducting support programs for women with cancer
  • Accredited Breast Care Nurse with Cancer Council Victoria
  • Working towards post graduate studies in the relevant area

COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement

Please be aware that in line with the Health Minister's Covid-19 Mandatory Vaccination Order, all workers at the Women's regardless of role, will be required to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 or hold an acceptable medical exemption.

If you were fully vaccinated (two doses) before the 12th of September 2021, you will also be required to provide evidence of having received a booster by the 12th of February 2022. If you received your second dose after the 12th of September 2021 and are not yet eligible to receive your booster, you will be required to show evidence of having received it by the 29th of March 2022.
