Remote / Work from Home
TierraMar is a dynamic national environmental organisation that has embarked on a 10-year journey of growth as we aim to help build a future where people and nature thrive together by 2030. To support that growth, we are looking for a qualified Manager Communications and Marketing, working part time (2 days a week) who is interested in building resilient communities and reversing nature loss by doing conservation differently. We work mostly in marine conservation with communities across Australia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific.
We are looking for a switched on and enthusiastic person to support our organisation by applying their exceptional communications and marketing, project management and writing skills, working with the Managing Director and others to deliver a best practice communications and marketing program to support our core mission.
If you are looking for an opportunity that will motivate and excite you to go to work every single day…. if you have commitment and desire for helping to secure a future where people and nature thrive then we want to hear from you.
TierraMar, established in 2008, recently became a registered charity that applies nature-based solutions and other innovative approaches to secure a future where people and nature thrive. We focus on Australia, the Pacific and Coral Triangle to unlock new and innovative thinking and collaborations, foster tomorrows change makers, and enable community led action on the ground. Our mission is to build resilient communities and reverse nature loss by helping to unlock transformational change. Our mission is being delivered through five strategic programs, with our current focus on two, namely GhostNets Australia (GNA) and Generation Nature+ (GenN).
Strategic Program: GhostNets Australia
TierraMar has been involved in GNA since its creation and took over the long running, award winning program in 2016. Our focus is on northern Australia as well as other hotspot areas in Australia, the Coral Triangle and Pacific. Globally, ghostgear is a major sea-based source of marine debris. Nets are the most harmful type of marine debris, entangling and killing marine wildlife and can persist for decades. In Australia, ghostgear has been a major issue for many years, particularly in northern Australia and the Gulf of Carpentaria, with over 15,000 nets reported since 2004. The prevailing currents and conditions in the Arafura and Timor Seas and the Torres Strait make the Gulf of Carpentaria a global ghost gear and marine debris ‘hot spot’.Given the nature of ghostgear to continue fishing, they can entangle large, long-lived and slowly reproducing threatened, endangered and protected species like marine turtles, marine mammals, sharks and rays. Ninety percent of marine debris and ghostgear in northern Australia are foreign in origin so stopping the problem at the source is the best solution. TierraMar is working with our partners and through regional partnerships to develop and implement a regional action on marine debris and ghostgear and establish fit for purpose and financially sustainable disposal solutions that benefit communities. The second largest contributor to ghostgear in Australia comes from recreational fishing. TierraMar has recently commenced working with our partners to develop and implement a national plan of action to address litter and ghostgear from recreational fishing.
Strategic Program: Generation Nature+
Generation Nature+ is a new program focusing on fostering tomorrow’s change makers and connecting people with nature. With the pressures of daily life, many Australians are disconnected to nature and have limited understanding of its value and importance in sustaining the planet and for our own health and wellbeing. Connecting Australians with nature is essential for our long-term mental and physical health, economic prosperity and in maintaining First Nations culture and identity. It is the younger generations, our future leaders, employees, business owners, entrepreneurs, and policymakers who will be charged with addressing the impacts of climate change, deteriorating ecosystem health, depleting, or altered water availability, and biodiversity loss. The next generation must be equipped with the knowledge, understanding and skills to address the challenges posed. Many are exiting the school system ill-equipped or with insufficient understanding of the scope and scale of these challenges, and are therefore unable to actively engage in ideating, designing and implementing viable nature-based solutions and climate neutral and nature positive decisions, irrespective of the industries or careers they pursue. Our focus is on building a nation where children have access to the benefits of nature everywhere the live, learn and play and the skills and knowledge to act as tomorrow’s leaders. This will be complemented with a broader but linked and targeted Nature Positive Communities Program that leverages key partnerships and strengthens and aligns policies towards increasing Australians’ connection and understanding of nature to reduce the impacts of activities and decisions on nature at all levels into the future.
