About This Opportunity

The Residence Life Manager is responsible for administering and supervising the operation of the student residential experience at University of Queensland's Gatton Halls of Residence. The incumbent is required to build a strong rapport with residents and develop a community environment conducive to the social growth and academic success of the residents living in the Halls. The position's responsibilities include the pastoral care and welfare of all residents, leadership and direction to the Resident Assistant team, student conduct and emergency response. The incumbent is required to be flexible with working hours and to work out of normal office hours on occasions.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Provide strategic advice and recommendations to the General Manager on all matters relating to residential life and student wellbeing.
  • Co-ordinate the recruitment, selection, training, performance and ongoing development of Volunteer Resident Assistants and Supervisors.
  • Develop and implement programs that promote and foster academic endeavour, student leadership, health and wellbeing and events & activities. Also, provide direction to the Residential Assistants and Residents’ Club for the successful implementation of such programs.
  • Ensure the appropriate levels of discipline and control within the residential community, invoke the House Rules and take appropriate action to resolve issues as required. Investigate, report and provide recommendations to the General Manager when disciplinary matters are warranted.
  • Respond to any incidents outside of business hours if required and provide support to the Resident Assistants and Supervisors.
  • Oversee the first-year orientation program for Halls of Residence students including liaison with University Staff.
  • Be visible in the Dining Hall and use mealtimes as an opportunity to mix with residents across the Halls.
  • Be available on some evenings and occasional weekends to attend Halls community events and conduct meetings with Resident Assistants as required.
  • Any other duties as reasonably directed by your UQ Res General Manager.

About You

Essential

  • Completion of a degree or diploma level qualification with relevant work related; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
  • Experience in a similar capacity with a focus on leadership and wellbeing in a university/youth environment.
  • Demonstrated experience planning and coordinating programs and events.
  • Strong interpersonal & communication skills including the ability to relate to people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated high level ability to direct effective work teams, resolve conflict and participate equitably in positive and successful organisational wide teams working to achieve corporate goals and objectives.
  • Ability and willingness to participate and support others as part of a dynamic and high functioning team.
  • Enthusiasm to engage effectively with and support young people and those from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to set work priorities appropriate to meeting deadlines and commitments, with proven personal organisational skills and the capacity to work independently.
  • High level of computer literacy, with knowledge of Microsoft Office and an understanding of website content management, or the demonstrated ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge.
  • Current Australian driver’s license

Desirable

  • Experience working with students or within a tertiary education setting is desirable.

On campus accommodation is an option and can be negotiated with the preferred applicant.

Background

The primary function of the Halls of Residence is to provide the optimum residential environment for undergraduate students to succeed at the University of Queensland. The Halls of Residence comprise of four Halls; Thynne, Pitt, Shelton and Riddell, accommodating some 430 students. The Halls also provides accommodation to external students during residential schools as well as providing conference accommodation and facilities during the year.

Gatton Campus is a 60-minute drive west of Brisbane and only five minutes from the regional Centre of Gatton township.
