University College is a residential college located in Parkville opposite Melbourne University. The facility has capacity for up to 340 residents on site. Our diverse student body is predominantly made up of undergraduate students from regional Victoria, interstate and overseas. Many of our students are in their first year of university and are living away from home for the first time.
A small casual pool of Youth Workers is responsible for ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of the College overnight on a roster system, on average of 2 – 3 shifts per week 10pm – 6am. The Youth Worker team reports to the Dean of Students and liaises closely with the Student Wellbeing Coordinator on issues of student wellbeing and behaviour.
The Youth worker duties are:
- Community
- Attend to lock outs and other enquiries
- Be a visible and available security presence in the College during the evening
- Respond to wellbeing issues and assist with community-related issues
- Duty Rounds
- Accompany the Resident Tutor on 10.30pm Duty round
- Conduct at least 2 duty rounds per night
- Liaise with and brief the Resident Tutor on Duty on any issues that need to be submitted via the Follow Up Log and sent to the Dean of Students, the Student Wellbeing Coordinator and the Dean of Studies
- Emergency management
- Act as 1st responder, de-escalate situations or refer on. This may include contacting 000 or other emergency support services.
- Assist with emergency evacuations.
- Escalate incidents as required to the Dean of students.
Other duties as required throughout the College
Must have:
- Working with Children check
- National police clearance
- First Aid certificate
- Qualification, Cert IV or higher
- At least 5 years experience in youth related work
- Understanding of the specific needs of young adults in a residential environment, and or in higher education
- Experience requiring overnight responsibilities such as gained through Outdoor and Overseas expeditions or Music Festivals
- Ability to commence immediately and work a flexible roster
Pay Rates: Up to $62.50 per hour.
