The Victorian Aboriginal Health Service (VAHS) was established in 1973 to address the specific medical needs of Victorian Aboriginal communities. 2023 marks as a landmark year as VAHS proudly celebrate it’s 50-year of providing a comprehensive range of medical, dental, and social services for our community.

As well as providing a variety of medical services, VAHS is committed to supporting the well-being of the community through contributions to community events and activities. VAHS is also committed to assisting research into the ongoing needs of the community.

About the Opportunity

The ITC Indigenous Outreach Worker will work within a multi-disciplinary team environment and will be responsible for delivering a quality outreach service with high standards of care to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to manage their chronic health conditions.

The position is required to work with eligible clients who have a GP Management Plan and Team Arrangement across the Northwest and Eastern Metropolitan Regions of Melbourne and liaise with internal and external health service providers to improve health outcomes.

Key Selection Criteria

To be considered for this role you must have the following.

  • Understanding of and Commitment to the Aboriginal community.
  • Demonstrated links to the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community in the designated region.
  • Demonstrated experience in engaging with community groups and individuals.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills including the ability to liaise effectively with clients and provide client service in a professional manner while maintaining confidentiality and discretion.
  • Ability to take direction, determine priorities and manage own workload in order to meet agreed timelines and objectives.
  • Demonstrated computer literacy with experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and medical databases Acrobat, email and the internet, and the ability to rapidly learn new systems.
  • Proven ability to work as a member of a team or independently with minimal supervision.
  • Conscientious, committed, self-motivated, flexible.
  • A proactive team worker with a willingness to develop new skills and knowledge.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Certificate III qualification in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care or Community Services; and/or relevant equivalent experience - preferred
  • Demonstrated experience in engaging with community groups and individuals.
