At Very Special Kids, we believe that all children and young people have the right to a quality of life, no matter how long or short their life may be. We are a highly respected organisation with approximately 100 employees and over 750 volunteers who provide essential, free-of-charge, palliative care services for children and young people living with a life-liming condition. Very Special Kids provides specialist services for the whole family, including counselling, peer support, bereavement support, respite and end-of-life care at Victoria’s only hospice for children and young people.

about the role

Reporting to the Hospice Manager, this newly created position will provide both clinical and operational leadership across the Hospice team including direct operational support to the Hospice Manager, in accordance with documented policies and procedures. Collaborating with other key senior roles including the Intake & Assessment Coordinator and Family Support Team practitioners, you will ensure that together we can continue to provide support to children, young people and their families through our holistic and multidisciplinary approach.

You will take responsibility for the operational leadership of our Nurses and Personal Care Workers and be visible, clinically strong, energetic and flexible. You will also oversee the day-to-day operation of our Hospice activities, ensuring a friendly, warm, professional and safe work environment focussed on supporting and developing the team.

About you:

  • Current AHPRA Registered Nurse
  • 3-4 years+ nursing experience relevant to the position
  • Team leadership experience in a healthcare setting
  • Experience working with families within a health setting and commitment to the provision of family centred care preferred
  • Commitment to child-safe work practices and working in a child-safe environment
  • Experience working with children who have complex healthcare needs and/or a disability or willingness to upskill in this area
  • Experience in paediatric nursing or palliative care/community and/or the not-for-profit sectors
  • Strong communication skills with experience leading diverse work teams
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and within a team
  • Willingness to embrace change and ability to support the hospice manager during a change process.
