Overview of Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Corporation

The Wurundjeri Corporation is a community-based organisation representing the Traditional Owners of the Melbourne and Greater Melbourne region. It is a Registered Aboriginal Party appointed under the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006 that holds statutory responsibilities for the protection and management of Aboriginal cultural heritage objects and places in Victoria. Additional functions of The Wurundjeri Corporation include environmental land management, water governance, the provision of cross-cultural education and events, language and naming services and cultural consultations.

Role Purpose

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a passionate and driven Wellbeing Worker to join our dynamic team based in Abbotsford for a short-term 9 month contract. The key function of this role is to provide culturally sensitive, high-quality support and care to staff and members presenting with complex needs. Reporting to the Health and Wellbeing Manager. The Wellbeing Worker will provide support to staff and members through culturally appropriate service delivery that includes advocacy, case management, counselling and supported referral to local and Aboriginal-specific health service providers. Additional administrative responsibilities that support the function of the unit will also form part of your role including record keeping and case-note management. This position is office-based with travel to meet clients in the greater Melbourne area as required. Candidates who hold or are working towards attainment of a Certificate in Aboriginal Health Care will be highly regarded.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support staff and members through culturally appropriate service delivery that includes advocacy and supported referral to local and Aboriginal-specific health service providers.
  • Provide emotional, social support to staff and members through companionship, advocacy and practical support.
  • Develop and maintain supportive and effective relationships with staff and members.
  • Provide practical assistance to attend health appointments and services including assisting with scheduling of medical appointments (including to COVID-19 testing stations if applicable).
  • Promote culturally appropriate health and wellbeing services to ensure to staff and members have access to the services they need.
  • Under the direction of the Health and Wellbeing Manager, assist with the coordination and delivery of tailored care packages to staff and members.
  • Maintain respect for confidentiality and discretion at all times.
  • Maintain accurate and up to date case records and notes.
  • Ability to work in a safe manner and to follow occupational health and safety procedures and maintain safe working practices.
  • Ability to report on any health and safety hazards, incidents using appropriate procedures.

Key Selection Criteria

  • Experience working with Aboriginal individuals, families and communities in a community health care setting or similar.
  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written skills with emphasis on interpersonal communication skills, confidentiality and record-keeping.
  • Problem solving and time management skills including the ability to manage conflicting priorities.
  • Well-developed understanding of social determinates of health through an Aboriginal lens.
  • Ability to provide empathetic social and wellbeing support to staff and members.
  • Ability to use computer software for administrative purposes, to record client notes as required.
  • Current drivers’ licence and access to a vehicle.
  • Candidate must hold or obtain a current Working with Children’s check and will be required to undergo a Victorian Police Check.

Desirable Role Competencies

  • Qualification in Aboriginal Health Care or related field is highly desirable but not essential.
