Overview

This contractor role will provide an ongoing presence for Environmental Education NSW to support schools and other environmental educators in the Illawarra / South Coast and Greater Sydney region to enable sustainability teaching and learning. The role will be primarily based in the Illawarra with some work within the Greater Sydney region. The contractor would work from home and manage time and workdays as projects require. The contractor would need to provide workers compensation insurance and have, or be willing to get, a NSW Working with Children Check.

Part time temporary contract to 30 September 2026. Considerations may be made for a split role across the two Project Delivery areas below, please get in touch with us to discuss this.

Key Accountabilities

Project delivery – Sustainability Connect Illawarra / South Coast:

This project role runs to September 2026 and is externally funded by the NSW Government through the NSW Environmental Trust. The project aims to strengthen environmental education networks in the Illawarra and South Coast regions to take climate action within schools. It involves engaging education service providers and teachers through the Sustainability Connect online directory and co-designing climate teaching resources with teachers and environmental educators.

The contractor would design, develop and deliver workshops and forums, supported by the EENSW Program Manager. The role will be on average 12 hours/ week and is flexible depending on the project requirements.

Project delivery – Return and Earn NSW non-government schools pilot project - Greater Sydney:

This project (Feb-June 2025) aims to trial container collection solutions and infrastructure to address commonly identified barriers to school participation in Return and Earn.

The position will be required to engage:

  • Ten non-government schools, including seven Sydney based (five primary and two secondary) and three regional Illawarra (two primary and one secondary) to co-design action plans to implement Return and Earn.
  • Service providers and others to support school actions.
  • Evaluate the project including data collection, monitoring and case studies.

The role will be up to 19 hours/week from Feb-June including travel from the Illawarra region to Sydney schools.

Terms and Conditions:

  • Responsible to: EENSW Program Manager
  • Location: your home office and travel within Sydney / Wollongong area (EENSW is fully remote organisation)
  • Status: Contractor
  • Hours / Period of Employment: min.12hrs / week for up to 18 months
  • Remuneration: $65 / hr incl superannuation guarantee
  • Start: ASAP

Selection Criteria

Essential:

  • Demonstrated strong project management skills.
  • Qualifications or equivalent experience in any of the following: environmental education, community engagement, school education, community education.
  • Experience working with teachers, students and schools.
  • Ability to work as a contractor with flexible hours ie access to a home office, car, driver’s license and relevant insurances.
  • Demonstrated experience and confidence to plan and lead workshops in a range of formats, including face to face and online.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good understanding of co-design practice.

Desirable:

  • Understanding of NSW curriculum and syllabus
  • Previous experience in data collection and evaluation
  • Previous experience in a non-profit or environmental organisation
