Role

This role will work with our Chief Scientist to integrate climate science into stock transition plan analysis, and to expand and keep current ACCR’s knowledge base on decarbonisation. The position will join our high-performing Research Team, providing analysis to inform our strategies in relation to high emitting companies listed in Australia and globally. This level of analyst will be expected to operate with a significant degree of independence, bringing existing and up-to-date climate science expertise and substantial relevant professional experience. We are seeking someone who can undertake outstanding research presented in such a way as to achieve change and real world impact (rather than purely for an academic audience), produced within defined timeframes in a rapidly changing external context.

You’ll love this job if:

  • You love exploring how we get from where the world is today to where the world needs to be to mitigate climate change and fast-track the energy transition. You are motivated to grow your already substantial understanding of climate science.
  • You get a buzz out of uncovering the true picture of how a company is impacting the climate and figuring out when their claims about energy may not stack up once the data is examined. Your analytical and inquisitive mind leaves no stone unturned.
  • You genuinely enjoy working in an interdisciplinary team of professionals. You can be relied upon for your contribution, and you appreciate the complementary skills others bring to create outstanding research that leads to change.
  • You’re looking for a purpose-driven job surrounded by like-minded people.

Responsibilities

The role will provide climate and energy research and analysis as required, under the guidance of our Chief Scientist. The following are indicative of the tasks that may arise:

  • Compile and analyse literature, for example, on the role of types of energies, on sectoral decarbonisation pathways
  • Compile and analyse findings from significant energy transition reports and climate-related reports
  • Draft concise persuasive documents communicating ACCR’s position on complex matters relating to climate change and energy transition
  • Evaluate company climate transition plans
  • Present findings to internal and external audiences in the form of reports, presentations and webinars.

Criteria

We’re looking for someone with these types of skills and experience:

  • Understanding of the fundamentals of climate science, climate scenarios, climate mitigation and adaptation, and the role of the types of energy in the energy transition
  • Awareness of the main climate change policy initiatives and/or policy incentives that have an impact on national and sectoral decarbonisation and the role of national determined contributions
  • Excellent analytical skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Excellent organisational skills, including prioritisation, attention to detail, ability to work to deadlines, and to move quickly if opportunities present themselves

You are also a person with:

  • a strong work ethic, and would thrive working in and learning from a collaborative, deeply experienced and committed team of equities analysts, researchers and climate scientists
  • an alignment to ACCR’s mission and values, including valuing diversity; and
  • a desire to make a difference in the global fight to reduce greenhouse gas emissions worldwide.

As a bonus (but not required) you also have:

  • Coding experience (e.g. python)
  • Experience with IPCC scenario database or other institutional scenario database (e.g. IEA)
  • Advanced degree in environmental science or similar

If you don’t meet every point above, please still apply if you can see your skills well used in this role.
