Position overview

The Disability Employment Catalyst project is partnering with Life Without Barriers, Achieve Australia, and Yooralla to provide sustainable, good quality jobs for candidates with disability in the disability/care sector.

We are seeking a Lead Advisor with significant experience in diversity and inclusion to support partner organisations in building their capacity and capability to employ people with disability at scale.

You will work directly with Life Without Barriers (LWB) to realise their aim of ensuring all managers are confident and capable to support staff with disability to do their best work (2 days/week). Candidates who are interested in additional days may also assist with inclusive recruitment as part of the project.

Your expertise and lived experience of disability will be an asset in this role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Innovation at Life Without Barriers: Execute on quarterly sprint activities which build the capability of managers to support staff with disability, including:
    • Understand the practices of high performing managers.
    • Distil observable behaviour and work with project stakeholders to understand how to translate individual actions to consistent performance expectations.
    • Identify barriers to inclusive practice.
    • Develop tools and resources.
    • Participate in quarterly learning events to track what works to shift practice.
  • Supporting the practice of other partners: In partnership with the LWB’s Diversity and Inclusion Lead, collate the tools, resources and insights from LWB practice to share with other project partners.

Support inclusive recruitment

  • Candidate focus
    • Engage with candidates to understand skills and interests and support requirements.
    • Make recommendations for training and support as appropriate
    • Prepare a summary profile for job each candidate to ensure a strong job match.
    • Prepare candidates for interviews/assessments and with partner organisations.
  • Partner/employer support
    • Work closely with employers to understand role requirements, working environment and adjustments for the purpose of job matching.
    • Brief recruiter and/or hiring managers on candidate requirements.
    • Assist hiring managers, candidates, and their support service to develop and implement the Employment Support Plan.
    • Facilitate post placement support

Qualifications and Skills

  • Lived experience with disability.
  • A bachelor's degree in social work, education, counselling, or a related field or relevant skills and experience.
  • Previous experience in diversity and inclusion in large organisations
  • Familiarity with disability rights, accommodations, and laws related to employment (such as the Disability Discrimination Act 1992).
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interact with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Empathy, patience, and the ability to motivate and empower individuals/strategically influence.
  • Understanding of diverse disabilities and their potential impact on employment.

Contract type

This will be a [12-month contract] from 2-4 days / a week with potential for extension. Candidates will be expected to work remotely, but placement in an office can be considered. Travel and flexibility for occasional work outside of business hours may be required.
