Purpose of the Retail Assistant – The Sewing Basket role

At the Sewing Basket, we sell donated fabrics, patterns, patchwork, embroidery materials, knitting, crochet yarn, haberdashery and more, while providing employment for people with disability. Our colourful shops give donated fabrics and other products a second life, stopping them from going to landfill. We are looking for a retail assistant to work in our Caringbah store on a casual basis.

Role Responsibilities

  • This is a permanent part-time role to work on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, plus additional hours during the weekend or at events as needed.
  • Work with a team of employees, volunteers and supported employees to ensure and promote customer satisfaction in the retail outlet.
  • Assist in the day-to-day shop workflow organisation and functioning including stock presentation, measuring and labelling of stock for retail display.
  • Assisting customers with point-of-sale transactions, including calculating sales totals, operating the cash register and the EFTPOS terminal.
  • Performing the end of day sales tally and reconciliation and complete the necessary daily sales reports.
  • Assist with the collection and handling of incoming donations & preparation for transfer to the Kincumber warehouse.
  • Be helpful and active in handling customer enquiries and customer complaints.
  • Assist to provide customers with the necessary support to ensure that their shopping experience is a happy and satisfying one and that the focus of employees and volunteers is directed towards achieving good outcomes for customers.
  • Contribute to stock management and reordering.

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Knowledge and understanding of sewing, quilting and related craft and skill activities would be highly regarded.
  • Demonstrated experience in retail sales and customer service.
  • Experience with point-of-sale equipment.
  • Experience in a similar donation life cycle environment.
  • Ability to work well with colleagues, employees and volunteers.
