About the Opportunity

The Attorney-General's Department of South Australia has exciting opportunities for Witness Assistance Officers to join the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions pool based in Adelaide. We have a current vacant role to be filled and all other successful applicants are placed in a pool and notified as suitable vacancies arise.

Witness Assistance Officers work alongside ODPP legal staff to support the prosecution process including by:

  • Assisting victims and their families to understand information about legal processes and providing practical support so that they can participate in the criminal justice system to the best of their ability.
  • Informing victims of their rights, as well as their responsibilities as witnesses, so that they can give their best evidence in court.
  • Facilitating referrals to community-based support services which may assist people to engage with the prosecution process and manage the impact of offending.
  • Providing updates as the matter progresses through the criminal justice system and helping victims and their families understand the role of the ODPP.

About the Business

The ODPP is an office of approximately 180 staff, comprising both legal and administrative functions. The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions was established through the Director of Public Prosecutions Act, 1991 to provide an effective, fair and independent criminal prosecution service for the people of South Australia. The Office is committed to the highest ethical and professional standards.

Special Conditions for Employment

Employment is dependent upon a National Police Certificate clearance that the AGD finds satisfactory. Successful applicants will be provided further information if an interview is requested. Forms are not to be lodged directly with SA Police (SAPOL) under any circumstances and any fees incurred by applicants in doing so will not be recoverable from the AGD.

  • Some interstate and intrastate travel may be required
  • Tertiary qualifications in social sciences, behavioural sciences, community services, justice, human services, health or related field
  • A current Working with Children Check certificate
  • Travel to country areas involving overnight absences may be required
  • Will be exposed, either directly or indirectly to confidential, sensitive, confronting and/or distressing material including photographs, written descriptions and other evidentiary material
