About Us

We are the Australian Government’s key independent research agency and advisor in the area of family wellbeing, based in the Melbourne CBD. We produce research about what works for families and make it accessible to decision makers, practitioners and the general public.

Our Team

The Australian Gambling Research Centre (AGRC) conducts policy-relevant research to enhance understanding of the nature and extent of gambling participation and related harm in Australia, and advance knowledge of ways to prevent and reduce harm. The AGRC is situated within AIFS. We are a multi-disciplinary team with expertise across gambling and related behaviours, public health, psychology and statistics. 

Position duties

Senior Research Officers (APS5-6) are experienced researchers who have subject matter expertise in one or more topic areas relevant to AIFS projects and play a vital role in helping AIFS deliver its research projects.

Requirements to be successful include:

  • Demonstrated experience in quantitative and mixed methods research in gambling or related behaviours.
  • Ability to coordinate research tasks and projects, and monitor and prioritise work to meet deadlines.
  • Superior critical thinking, exceptional writing ability, strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well in a team.
  • Excellent organisational skills, including the ability to work independently and have a flexible approach to diverse work demands.
  • Relevant qualifications or equivalent experience in a relevant discipline such as public health, economics, psychology, behavioural sciences, health sciences or other related social sciences.

Research Fellows (Executive Level 1) at AIFS take a leading role in managing and delivering our research projects. Research Fellows have leadership skills and are experienced researchers and managers with significant subject matter expertise in one or more topic areas relevant to AIFS projects.  

Requirements to be successful include:

  • Demonstrated experience in quantitative and mixed methods research in gambling or related behaviours.
  • Excellent project management skills and the ability to develop and lead research projects and complete work to a high standard.
  • Proven ability to manage key stakeholder relationships internally and externally.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and experience in producing high-quality written materials.
  • Proven leadership skills and highly developed interpersonal skills, including the ability to build and work collaboratively with team members and external stakeholders and organisations.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing research teams and projects to meet timelines and achieve results.
  • A positive and flexible approach to diverse work demands in a fast-paced environment.
  • PhD in a relevant discipline such as public health, economics, psychology, behavioural sciences, health sciences or other related social sciences.

Terms

The Senior Research Officer and Research Fellow positions may be offered on an ongoing or non-ongoing basis of up to 18 months on a full-time or part-time basis (0.8 FTE minimum).  

The Senior Research Officer positions is at the APS5-6 level with a salary of between $78,775 to $97,092, and the Executive Level 1 positions salary is between $108,357 to $119,661, depending on the skills and experience of the successful applicants, plus 15.4% superannuation.
