DEPARTMENT:

Alfred Mental & Addiction Health (AMAH) is the Area Mental Health Service responsible for the operation of services, which focus on people with a severe mental illness residing in the Inner South-eastern area of Melbourne.

Services are provided by a number of teams located at the Alfred Hospital (Commercial Road, Prahran) and at St Kilda Road Clinic in St. Kilda, Alma Road CCU in St. Kilda, the Child & Adolescent Service currently located in Moorabbin and Aged Psychiatry based at Caulfield Hospital.

LIVED/LIVING EXPERIENCE:

Carer Lived/Living Experience work is about how one’s own experiences of caring for someone struggling with mental distress is shared to support and hold hope for others. If you have spent your life caring for others and learning from your experiences, you may be the person we are looking for to join our team.

POSITION:

The role will be based at St Kilda Road Clinic and is to provide peer support to carers and families that have a relative or friend receiving treatment form Alfred Mental and Addiction Health community programs. The position will work in partnership with the Lived Experience workforce and clinical treating teams ensuring the unique needs of families are understood and that families are supported during the treatment planning processes.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • A personal identification with caring experiences of a family member or person with mental ill health.
  • Knowledge of mental health issues and an understanding of the impact on families and carers and a capacity to convey hope.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the principles of peer support and a willingness to share your experience in a purposeful way.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage individuals and or families through telephone or 1:1 support in an empowering and ethical manner.
  • Understanding of the complexities and challenges of the mental health system.
  • Ability to work flexibly, organise work load and manage time effectively
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Knowledge of requirements related to confidentiality and privacy within health services.
  • Ability to work closely with a wide variety of families, other carers, staff and relevant groups both internally and externally
  • An understanding of the diversity of the cultural and linguistic backgrounds of our community and the impact this has on consumer and carer experiences of mental illness.
  • Computer literacy as a requirement of the role.
