Applications are invited for the full-time ongoing position of Policy & Parliamentary Adviser in the Office of Allegra Spender MP, based in the Member’s Electorate Office in Edgecliff, NSW.

The Policy and Parliamentary Adviser works closely with the Chief of Staff to advise the Member on policy and strategic goals with a focus on economic issues, including guidance on issues management and Parliamentary business. This includes developing and executing a proactive policy agenda, advising on legislation and issues arising in the community, economy and media, in addition to managing stakeholder relations.

about the role

The key responsibilities of the role are, but are not limited to:

  • Work with the Member and Chief of Staff on the development and implementation of policy and strategic goals - with a strong focus on economic and business policy.
  • Advise the Member on Parliamentary business (legislation advice, preparation of amendments, policy briefs and proposals, committee work and inquiry preparation and reports, Private Members’ Bills, Motions, Speech Notes, Parliamentary Groups, Committees and Associations, etc.) in conjunction with the Chief of Staff.
  • Advise the Member on issues of relevance arising in the media, economy and community.
  • Update and advise the Electorate Office team on policy developments/issues and the Member’s position on these.
  • Carry out research and policy analysis on key areas to be agreed with the Member, with a focu on economic policy.
  • Maintain awareness of issues via media monitoring and network contacts.
  • Attend events and functions with or on behalf of the Member as required.
  • Significant travel within the electorate and to Canberra for parliamentary sitting periods will be required as part of this role.
  • Other reasonable duties as required.

about you

The ideal applicant should possess the following skills, experience and qualifications:

  • A background in business and economics (study and/or work experience) is required.
  • Experience in finance, treasury or economic policy will be well regarded.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and oral presentation skills.
  • Interpersonal and relationship management skills.
  • Capacity to be proactive, meet deadlines and work under pressure.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a collaborative team environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant field of study.
  • The ability to work under pressure and maintain the highest ethical standards is essential.
  • Previous working experience in federal parliament or experience with policy development is also desirable.

Employment conditions:

The position is offered under the Members of Parliament (Staff) Act 1984 and conditions are outlined in the Commonwealth Members of Parliament Staff Enterprise Agreement 2020-23 which include:

  • A commencing salary between $71,245 and $83,179 will be negotiated depending on experience and relevant skills.
  • An additional optional allowance of up to $50,000 may be considered in recognition of, and as compensation for, reasonable additional hours of work and incoming experience.
  • Relocation assistance, studies assistance and paid study leave may also be available (subject to eligibility requirements).
  • An employer superannuation contribution of 15.4% will be payable.

An initial probationary period of three months will apply and may be subject to extension.

The successful applicant will be required to comply with the Draft Behaviour Standards and Code endorsed by both Houses of Parliament and may be required to undergo a National Police History check.
