The National Mental Health Consumer Alliance (NMHCA) is the national peak body advocating for the rights of people with lived experience of mental health challenges.

We are looking for an experienced Project Manager for the Making Rights Real (MRR) project, who will conduct active and accessible consultation and co-design sessions about human rights with people with psychosocial disability/mental health challenges, and relay the insights gathered into research findings and communication avenues including reports, website content, social media, and media narratives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate regular consultations and co-design sessions with people with psychosocial disability about their human rights to track live issues and advocate on issues of high importance.

  • Work with other Disability Representative Organisations to advocate strongly for the rights of people with psychosocial disability based on consultations with people with psychosocial disability.

  • Write reports, website content, social media content, email newsletter content for the Making Rights Real project based on the insights you have gathered through consultations and co-design sessions.

  • Work closely with our consortium partners at Community Mental Health Australia (CMHA), and your colleagues at the National Mental Health Consumer Alliance (NMHCA).

  • Lend a helping hand on projects and events throughout the year in addition to regular duties.

ATTRIBUTES WE'RE LOOKING FOR

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in a related discipline (community development, social science, public health, public policy etc.) and/or equivalent knowledge, skills and experience.

  • It is a genuine occupational qualification of this position to have a lived experience of mental health/social and emotional wellbeing issues and recovery in accordance with section 66(s)(c) of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984.

  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate discussions with peers in the pursuit of social justice.

  • Ability to represent an organisation or project in an advocacy setting.

  • Demonstrated ability to use qualitative evidence to produce public information, analysis, models and advice to support public campaigns.

  • Excellent written communication skills, including demonstrated ability to develop and contribute to high-quality written materials such as website content, social media content, and email newsletter content.

  • Excellent attention to detail, particularly spelling/grammar in communications content.

  • Demonstrated understanding of the mental health sector and/or the consumer movement and/or human rights, and experience utilising lived experience of mental health challenges to bring about change.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective stakeholder relationships including working with mental health consumer representatives and other advocacy organisations.

  • Demonstrated planning and organisational skills, especially in relation to meeting deadlines and managing competing priorities.

  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills to develop strategies, ideas and opportunities for resolving issues.

tHE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL BE REQUIRED TO PROVIDE (OR TO OBTAIN):

  • National Police Certificate.

  • Working with Children Check (or equivalent in your State/Territory).

  • Certification of tertiary or other qualifications.

About the Organisation

The National Mental Health Consumer Alliance (the Alliance) is a dynamic, interactive national Peak body that leads the way in systemic advocacy informed by the diversity of consumer experience and consumer perspectives. The Alliance promotes inclusivity and diverse representation by prioritising research, engagement, policy and advocacy initiatives that draw on the lived expertise of underrepresented groups, including First Nations people, culturally diverse, gender diverse, LGBTQIA+ communities, younger people, and people living in rural and remote communities. The Alliance is a small organisation, currently with 2 staff (CEO and National Policy & Research Manager) and we are currently also recruiting a National Communications Manager.
