Primary Objective

The Elder Care Support - Aged Care Workforce Program aims to assist older Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their families to navigate and access aged care services. The program includes activities to increase workforce capability and capacity in community-controlled aged care support and to empower the community-controlled sector to coordinate place-based aged care needs.

Role Description

The Workforce and Training Coordinator will support the Elder Care Support (ECS) workforce employed within Member Services with all workforce and training needs. The Workforce and Training Coordinator will be supported to complete a train-the-trainer qualification in order to deliver a suite of non-accredited training to the local ECS workforce and other participants as required. They will liaise with local ECS workers to ensure training enables them to support elderly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in their community and provide advocacy support to ensure workforce and clients participating in the aged care sector receive culturally safe care and conditions.

Underpinning the role are two key work practices: cultural safety and trauma informed practice.The role will work closely with the ECS Project Officers and Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) to support the ECS workforce in the Northern Territory. The duties may vary depending on the specific needs of the ECS workforce and the aged care landscape within the Northern Territory.

Responsibilities

  1. Undertake and complete non-accredited training along with train-the-trainer program.
  2. Ensure all ECS training and onboarding materials are customised for Northern Territory context and kept up to date to meet the workforce requirements.
  3. Deliver the suite of non-accredited ECS training and onboarding program to ECS workers and ACCHO staff within the Northern Territory in a culturally appropriate manner.
  4. Understand workforce needs and provide proactive support including identifying additional training resources as required and providing ongoing mentoring to the ECS workforce.
  5. Advocate to ensure ECS workforce needs are being met, and to address any issues with the aged care landscape.
  6. Build knowledge of local services and organisations that ECS workforce can utilise.
  7. Produce and deliver Northern Territory communication resources to support the ECS program workforce.
  8. Deliver Northern Territory ECS workforce and stakeholder Yarning Circles.
  9. Identify and map culturally appropriate service providers and service provision gaps.
  10. Participate in program evaluation activities.
  11. Participate in WALS team and AMSANT planning, and program activities as required.
  12. Any other duties as directed by WALS Manager

Selection Requirements (Qualifications & Attributes)

Essential

  1. Demonstrate in-depth knowledge & understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, cultures, histories, politics and principles of the Aboriginal community-controlled health sector.
  2. Demonstrate an ability to effectively communicate and engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in a culturally appropriate and respectful manner.
  3. Relevant tertiary qualifications and/or experience in the health or care sector and/or education/training fields.
  4. Effective oral/written communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trusting relationships.
  5. Experience in or willingness to learn about development, delivery and/or facilitation of training.
  6. Demonstrated understanding of the principles of person-centred care and trauma-informed practice.
  7. Ability to multi-task, prioritise workloads and meet deadlines.
  8. Sound understanding of, or ability to quickly acquire knowledge and understanding of the aged care sector and systems.
  9. Ability to or willingness to acquire data entry and reporting skills.
  10. Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated with experience working unsupervised and as part of a team.

Desirable

  1. Previous experience working in Aboriginal primary health or care sector in the NT
  2. Clinical qualifications or experience
  3. Current Senior First Aid Certificate
