The Australian Muslim Women’s Centre for Human Rights (AMWCHR) is an organisation of Muslim women working to advance the rights and status of Muslim women in Australia.

We are a non-religious organisation reflecting the sectarian, cultural and linguistic diversity within the Muslim community.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Specialist Cultural Advisor role will provide expert advice on issues affecting Muslim victims' survivors including children and youth and people using violence (PUV) to integrated family violence services. The role will be embedded within The Orange Door (TOD) across a range of locations in TOD’s network, as well as at the Australian Muslim Women's Centre for Human Rights (AMWCHR). The Specialist Cultural Advisor will bridge service gaps, reduce barriers for victim survivors to access support and resources, and improve outcomes for communities. They will be able to manage stakeholder relationships whilst also delivering practice guidance and advice to a broad range of practitioners.

Identifying as a Muslim woman with a culturally diverse background, the ideal candidate will bring lived experience and cultural knowledge to the role to effectively address the unique challenges faced by Muslim migrant women. This perspective positions the Specialist Cultural Advisor to support other practitioners in moving beyond tolerance into a deeper commitment to learning and valuing the diverse experiences, challenges, and needs of diverse Muslim women.Additionally, the Specialist Cultural Advisor must have a comprehensive understanding of the impact of culture and faith in identifying and responding to the presenting issues, ensuring that the support provided is culturally sensitive and appropriate for each individual’s needs.

This role requires a deep understanding of the integrated family violence system, including the dynamic nature of risk and the role it plays across intake and case management processes. The Specialist Cultural Advisor is a confident advocate and will be experienced in navigating systemic racism and discrimination and able to identify bias and discrimination on the interpersonal and systems levels.

Key liaison: Director of Client Services, Casework Practice Lead, Client Services Team

External Liaison: Family Violence Services, Victoria Police, Court, Child Protection, Family Services, Men’s Services, Corrections, Health Services, Housing and Homelessness Services, Community members, Government agencies, Settlement Services.
