This role has been designed to launch a current student or recent graduate into a fulfilling career within the AOD sector. It will assist a Trainee to learn every part of the AOD landscape and work with a range of different clients, from young people to adults and family groups at various stages of their treatment journey.

The role is full time and will allow a Trainee to attend current study commitments during work hours or undertake further training in the AOD area while earning a full time wage. When not attending class, the Trainee will be emersed into our AOD teams to build an understanding of contemporary AOD practice and to develop the skills required to work in this sector. 

The details:

  • The ideal candidate will be a student or recent graduate from human service related courses such as:
    • Cert IV in AOD
    • Diploma in Community Service
    • Bachelor in Social Work, Counselling, or Mental Health and AOD 
  • Applicants will ideally have some community sector experience but cannot have undertaken paid worked in AOD before.
  • Current student will be able to attend class during work hours as required and recent graduates will have the opportunity to attend AOD Skills training (or similar) during work hours as well as other professional development opportunities specific to AOD
  • SCHADS Level 3
  • The role is fixed term (10.5 months) ideally commencing in March 2024 

What are you going to be doing?

This is a dynamic role and the successful candidate will build capacity to be flexible and adaptable within an AOD environment. Some of the key position responsibilities includes:

  • Supporting the team in providing telephone-based intake service, bridging support, brief intervention, comprehensive assessment, information, advice and referrals to individuals and families (including assessment of mental health and family violence risk).
  • Learning how to enhancing the ability of individuals, family members and significant others to respond to drug and alcohol issues and build self-efficacy through the delivery of effective brief interventions and single-session work.
  • Assisting in the development of comprehensive assessments and individual treatment plans whilst working within a harm reduction framework.
  • Working collaboratively within a team environment and engaging with internal and external stakeholders with the support of the team. 

What do we need from you?

  • Some understanding and keen desire to increase the knowledge and experience in models of contemporary approaches in the alcohol and drug field.
  • Highly developed communication skills (written and oral) and an understanding of conflict resolution skills relevant to AOD.
  • Good computer, organisational and time management skills and the ability to be self-directed, accountable and collaborative.
  • A current First AID Certificate is desirable, or be willing to obtain first aid certificate for the role. 

You also need some specific qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a course at a Cert IV, Diploma or Bachelor level, or within 2 years of graduating from a relevant discipline such as AOD, Community Services, Counselling, Social Work, Mental Health or Psychology.
  • Previous experience in a community service setting is desirable, however due to the nature of the AOD Trainee Program, this role is not open to those who have already undertaken paid worked in an AOD role.

  • SCHADS Level 3.1 which equates to around $ 73,171 plus super working full time hours (38 hours per week)
