About Anika

Anika Legal is a not-for-profit social enterprise with a vision of a world where everyone has access to justice. We are working towards that vision by providing free, online legal assistance to those who can't access it by connecting people who need legal assistance with law students, and supervising lawyers. The Anika team is made up of 6 co-founders (including our full-time CEO), a full-time Operations Manager, and 24 volunteers. We are setting up as an independent legal practice and are looking for the right person to join the team as our first Principal Lawyer.

The Role

The Principal Lawyer will be Anika’s sole practising lawyer and will play a key role in setting Anika up as an independent law firm. The Principal Lawyer’s typical responsibilities will include the approval of legal advices prepared using Anika’s standard-form precedents. The Principal Lawyer will work closely with Noel Lim (CEO), Alex Eidelman (Operations Manager), and Nathan Ramanlal (Head of Product).

This is a new role in a young organisation which challenges the way things are typically done. As such, the nature and conditions of the role are extremely flexible and will undoubtedly evolve as Anika grows. We hope to work with the successful applicant to create a role which best suits everyone's needs, and this will be discussed in all interviews.

Qualifications

• Have/are able to obtain a principal lawyer practicing certificate in Victoria
• 3+ years of experience working as a lawyer
• Have tenancy law experience in Victoria

Key Responsibilities

• Setting up and developing a legal practice
• Reviewing draft legal advice produced by law students
• Providing feedback to students
• Provide feedback to the Product Team to assist product development
• Interfacing with and guiding different business areas including marketing, finance, and sales
