We’re now looking for a strategic and influential leader to join as Head of Public Affairs and Advocacy — someone who can amplify the voice of veterinarians, influence national policy, and shape the narrative around one of Australia’s most trusted professions.

In this pivotal role, you will guide AVA’s national voice — leading its public affairs, advocacy, media, marketing, and communications strategies. This is your opportunity to make a lasting impact in a values-driven, member-based organisation.

Your Impact

As Head of Public Affairs and Advocacy, you will lead the AVA’s public positioning, working directly with the CEO and senior stakeholders to:

• Drive national policy development and advocacy initiatives
• Shape and deliver strategic communications, media and marketing campaigns
• Represent AVA in government, industry, and media engagements
• Lead a high-performing team to deliver impactful, member-focused outcomes
• Serve as a trusted spokesperson and advisor on issues critical to the veterinary profession

What You Bring

• 8–10+ years in public affairs, advocacy, or government relations
• A strong track record in policy influence, stakeholder engagement, and media leadership
• Deep understanding of Australia’s political, regulatory and media landscape
• Outstanding written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
• Leadership experience with multi-disciplinary teams and strategic planning
• Veterinary or animal health sector qualifications and knowledge are highly desirable
• Relevant tertiary qualifications; postgraduate preferred
