AWC's mission - to deliver effective conservation for all native animal species and their habitats - is achieved by:

• Science - delivering the largest national biological survey program with a focus on measuring the population of indicator species and the extent of threatening processes as well as conducting research on key issues such as feral cat control.
• Fundraising - mobilising finance (primarily, tax deductible donations) from the general public and philanthropists including through effective communication of field updates from around the AWC estate.

About the role

AWC has established an exciting new partnership with the Traditional Owners of the Ngalurrtju Aboriginal Land Trust. The partnership project aims to deliver effective conservation by applying AWC’s approach to conservation alongside strong engagement with Traditional Owners in planning and through direct employment of Indigenous Rangers.

With that, AWC is seeking a passionate Indigenous Ranger Coordinator (IRC) to join the Ngalurrtju team. Reporting to the Operations Manager, the IRC is responsible for managing a small team of Indigenous Rangers to be employed casually to undertake works per an approved Conservation Land Management Program. This role requires engagement with various key stakeholders such as:

• Traditional Owners & AWC Indigenous Rangers
• Central Land Council
• Ngalurrtju Steering Committee (Traditional Owner Representatives).

The role involves engaging with AWC supporters and donors, including Supporter Events and contributing to AWC’s communications program, which are essential functions of this position. In this respect, the successful candidate will need to be a strong advocate for AWC’s conservation model and achievements.

Critical competencies

• Demonstrated experience across a broad range of natural resource / land management function
• Good communication and interpersonal skills across a wide range of groups including neighbouring landholders, scientists, traditional owners, volunteers, contractors and visitors is essential.
• Demonstrated capability to work alone or equally able to work as part of a small team.
• A demonstrated ability to organise, co-ordinate, prioritise and execute a number of tasks in an efficient manner.
• Ability to use standard business software packages including Word, Excel, and email.
• Previous experience of, and ability to, work and live in remote areas and a willingness to spend extended periods in the field.
• The ability to improvise and ‘problem-solve’, developing practical solutions with limited resources.
• Understanding of and interest in Australian ecology and conservation issues.

Qualifications

• Formal qualifications in a relevant discipline would be an advantage, but is less important than strong, practical experience and a good track record of delivering ‘on-ground’ results.

Licenses, Certificates and/or Training

• Valid manual driver’s license (4WD experience in difficult conditions essential)
• Senior first aid certificate (remote certification – highly desirable)
• Valid firearms license (highly desirable)
• Valid agricultural machinery licenses such as trucks, backhoes and other relevant machinery (desirable).
• Chemical use certification (desirable)
• Training qualification in bushfire control (desirable)
• National Police Clearance certificate.

PLEASE NOTE: this role is initially offered as a 12-month fixed term contract, with the possibility for an extension or permanency. The role is based in Alice Springs with regular trips to Ngalurrtju (2.5hr drive), where basic on-site accommodation is available.
