The Australian Workers’ Union (AWU) is looking for a passionate and driven Construction Organiser to join our Victorian Branch based in West Melbourne.

Key Responsibilities
As a Construction Organiser, you will:
- Build Membership: Recruit new members and provide ongoing support to existing AWU members.
- Develop and Implement Strategic Plans: Design and execute impactful organising strategies tailored to our members' needs.
- Negotiate and Advocate: Engage with local management to secure strong outcomes for members, including negotiating enterprise agreements.
- Drive Member Engagement: Conduct organising conversations, inspire collective action, and uphold the core values of the union.
- Mentor and Empower: Identify, mentor, and support workplace delegates and activists to lead and represent their co-workers.
- Campaign Leadership: Initiate and lead industry and workplace campaigns to advance workers' rights and conditions.
- Support Health and Safety: Work with health and safety representatives (HSRs) to advocate for safe workplaces.
- Represent Members: Appear on behalf of the AWU and members at the Fair Work Commission.
SELECTION CRITERIA
The ideal candidate will have:
- Union or Campaign Experience: Demonstrated experience in union organising, campaign management, or membership engagement within unions or not-for-profits.
- Civil Construction Industry Knowledge – solid understanding of industry conditions and dynamics.
- Commitment to Union Values: A passion for upholding union principles and advocating for workers’ rights.
- Knowledge of Legislation: Familiarity with OHS legislation and the Fair Work Act.
- Proactive Attitude: Ability to generate ideas and work collaboratively within a team environment.
- Excellent Communication Skills: Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills to effectively connect with and represent members.
- Organisational Abilities: Capability to manage competing priorities independently.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in Office 365 and CRM databases.
- Professionalism and Discretion: High standards in handling confidential information.
- Right of Entry Capacity: Ability to pass the fit and proper person test for holding a right of entry permit.
- Driver’s Licence: Valid and current.
