Founded in 1983 by its Chair and Cultural Director, Yanyuwa man John Moriarty and Managing Director and Creative Executive, Ros Moriarty. As an award-winning agency our founders are recognised for their design excellence and unparalleled contribution to building bridges of best practice participation between Aboriginal communities, business and the broader community.

We assist our national and international clients to express Australian identity through best practice co-design with Country and community, for construction, interiors, public art, digital and design and communications. The company’s work spans graphic design, branding, digital, infrastructure, urban design, precinct planning, public art and curatorial and interiors.

The Role

The Indigenous Community Engagement Specialist is a key role that will continue to build on Balarinji’s long-standing and valued relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. You will work across a diverse breadth of client deliveries, to ensure best practice engagement with local Indigenous communities on major design projects.

You thrive on building and fostering relationships whilst using your proactive thinking and problem-solving skills to achieve tasks and goals. You are a strong communicator that is adaptable whilst remaining calm and supportive.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide advice regarding Indigenous community engagement.
  • Build positive relationships with key stakeholders from a diverse range of community groups and to assist with engagement required across projects.
  • Work closely with relevant community groups and other stakeholders to discuss project opportunities, as well as develop and implement engagement strategies.
  • Draft Indigenous stakeholder communications, relevant to the project delivery requirements.
  • Manage, facilitate, and attend Indigenous community consultations and workshops.
  • Contribute to and review consultation reports to ensure community feedback has been accurately recorded.
  • Accountable for the day to day delivery of community engagement activities.

Experience

  • Ideally 2+ years’ Community engagement experience.
  • Have a knowledge and understanding of the dynamics and protocols of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and be able to communicate effectively with local communities.
  • Stakeholder management skills with the ability to build and influence successful partnerships and networks.
  • Ability to work autonomously as well as cohesively as part of a small team.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
